Elizabeth M. Bright

Mrs. James C. Bright, 86, of Avondale Estates passed away on Wednesday, 8 September 2010 following a brief illness. She was a retired educator, having taught math and English at Towers High School, in DeKalb County, GA, for twenty years. Mrs. Bright nee Elizabeth Shirley Maxwell was born in Emporia, Kansas, and grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas, where she was Valedictorian of her high school class. She was awarded the Donnelly Scholarship and received freshman and sophomore honors at the University of Kansas. She later transferred to the University of Kentucky from which she received a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She received her Master of Arts Degree from the University of Louisville KY and completed further graduate work at Georgia State, Oglethorpe and Emory Universities. She was a veteran of World War II having served in the WAVES at the National Naval Medical Center NNMC located in Bethesda, MD. It was in the Navy that she met her future husband, James C. Bright, also a Navy Veteran. They were married in 1947. She is survived by her husband, who was for many years a practicing attorney at law in Kentucky before becoming the Regional Counsel, Southeast Region, of the Bureau of ATF. Also surviving is a son, Allan H. Bright of Decatur, a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Russell Berry, grandsons Paul, Charles, and James Berry, all from Beaufort, SC, and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Bright has been cremated in accordance with her wishes. There will be no visitation, and all services are to be private.
