Joanne C. Polentz, 67, of Stone Mountain, GA, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014. Daughter of the late Cyril R. Kranick and Vivian M. (Flynn) Kranick, she was born in Scranton, PA on June 27, 1946. She resided in Stone Mountain for 36 years, but also previously lived in Scranton, PA; Kaneohe, HI; Virginia Beach, VA; Albany, GA and Wyomissing, PA.
Joanne was a 1964 graduate of Marywood Seminary and received her RN from Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing in 1967, going to work at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, PA.
Joanne married Bernard T. Polentz, formerly of Scranton, PA, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Clarks Summit, PA, March 30, 1970. They recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary.
Joanne was an active member of every community in which she lived. A member of the Officers Wives Club, she also was a case counselor with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, GA. She was a Girl Scout troop leader, Service Unit Director, and helmed GS summer day camp, Camp Top O’Rock. She volunteered in the Stone Mountain High office, and was a founding member/past President of the MLR Homeowner’s Association, member of the Rockbridge Coalition, and most recently served as treasurer of Summerville Homeowner’s Association.
Joanne was a beloved and dedicated member of the parish at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Through the years, she taught CCD classes; assisted with annual holiday food drives to assist local families; organized fundraising teams for the Atlanta Hunger Walk, and was an usher. Joanne was also a member/past President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
In her spare time, Joanne enjoyed spending time with her family; playing her piano; reading European history; ALTA and USTA tennis; studying family genealogy; world travel and bird-watching.
In addition to her husband, Bernie (Major, USMC Retired), Joanne is survived by two daughters, Kirsten P. Haas and husband Chris, of Wyomissing, PA, and Bethany A. Polentz and husband, Robert Barics, of Alameda, CA; two step-grandchildren, Theo and Ella Barics; three brothers, Cyril Kranick and wife Nancy of Collegeville, PA, Robert Kranick and wife Joan, and Richard Kranick of Clarks Summit, PA; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins world-wide.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 11:00 AM, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 600 Mountain View Drive, Stone Mountain, GA with a reception to follow immediately afterwards. Wages & Sons Funeral Home, 1040 Main Street, Stone Mountain, GA, is assisting the family. Not only was Joanne part of every community she lived or worked in, she also made community everywhere she went. She never met a stranger, and understood hospitality and friendship to be central to life. She was fun, funny, fun to be around, and kind. She will be fervently remembered not just by those who loved her, but all who had the chance to meet her.
Dearest Bernie, Kirsten, Bethany, Chris, Rob, Theo, Ella, and the entire family. My deepest condolences for your loss. I cannot even begin to express my sadness and it has been hard to find the words to let you know how sorry I am. Joanne made me feel like another daughter, a member of the Polentz family, and touched my life in such a wonderful way. You are in my thoughts and heart. I love you all.

Bernie and family, I have no words to express my sorrow but please accept my condolences. Joanne and I met almost 50 years ago and while we didn’t always have the opportunity to spend time together she was a good friend to me and everyone else she met. She was a “go do” person, never one to sit on the sidelines. When she saw something needed to be done she was there. She is irreplaceable and is sorely missed.

I always thought was mine ringing. Always watching as I passed the house what new was being added. I can see now
why so much activity always going on .Joanne was so involved and active and kept that Bernie moving….all the time.
I will miss their chatting in the afternoon, and the lights on until late on the porch.. To all the family what a memory of such a good mom. I wish I had gotten to know her better. My condolences to you all ..

A thousand pardons for not sending Prayers and condolences earlier; before 2014!
I only heard recently from Joanne Sand( Sem class of ’64) that Joanne had passed; never said what year.
I met Joanne at the second Grand Sem Reunion. I was in the boarders; class of ’65 and seeing Joanne, I remembered her from years back!
I spoke once; for a length of time with her at her home on the phone.
She was a great lady and so full of energy! God rest her soul.
Will mail you a much belated Mass card for her.
