August 26, 1933 ~ May 18, 2023

Born in: Greenville, South Carolina
Resided in: Lilburn, Georgia

Betty Jean Thackston, 89 years young of Lilburn Georgia, passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2023.

Hailing from Greenville, South Carolina, Betty was the daughter of Jesse Price and Geneva Ballew Price, sister to Francis Price Poole, and wife of 67 years to Joe Ben Thackston Sr. Sadly, they have all preceded her in death. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe Ben Thackston Jr. and Shirley Cooley Thackston, as well as her granddaughter, Tess Thackston.

Betty Thackston was the homemaker in the early years of her marriage as her husband, Joe Ben Thackston Sr., served the US Army. Betty traveled around with her husband and son as Joe Sr. worked with the Kmart Corporation. Once they settled in Lilburn, Georgia, she took a role of seamstress with Atlas Flag Incorporated and worked for them for 25 years until she retired at 80 years young.

She was a southern lady through and through. She lived by God, enjoyed gardening, and her love language was food. Everyone that knew Betty, knew her as a great cook. From her famous chocolate cake to cooking for 40 plus people on Thanksgiving. All of it was delicious, and Betty refused to sit down until everyone was fed or silent from being too busy eating. She took pride in everyone’s reactions to her cooking and taking care of others made her smile.

Betty and Joe Sr. were beloved soulmates. Throughout their lives they were partners. Through the good and the bad. Through the times you can barely be near the other and the times you can’t stand to be apart. It all started in high school when Betty was class secretary and Joe Sr. would show up late. He begged her not to mark him absent, but it was just a chance to see her. They had a love without end and created a small family with their son, Joe Jr. Betty would be the rock between the two rowdy men in her life. Anytime they’d need to go somewhere, she’d press their pants and make them presentable. The Joes would in turn protect her from her least favorite thing- Snakes. Soon came another addition to the family, a granddaughter, Tess Thackston. Betty and Joe Sr. loved her so much. Betty would always make sure to have Tess’s favorite poundcake for her birthdays and Stouffer’s Mac N’ Cheese on Thanksgiving- even if Betty made an amazing oven baked Mac. Tess could do no wrong in Betty’s eyes.

Her family loved her, and she loved her family. Betty was fiery and often spoke her mind, but she cared about her family with all her heart. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend to all.

Betty Thackston will be terribly missed, but we will cherish her memory, and look forward to a wonderful reunion in Heaven when we will meet again.

The family will be hosting a grave side service on Thursday, May 25th, 2023 starting at 2pm EST at Gwinnett Memorial Park, 925 Lawrenceville Hwy, Lawrenceville, GA 30046.
