Bharatkumar B. Joshi of Atlanta, beloved husband of 46 years to Indira (Rajyaguru) passed away peacefully at home on August 19, 2022, surrounded by his loving family who will cherish his memory forever. He was affectionately referred to as Bharat by his friends, Dad and Docs by his children, Nana/Dada (grandfather) by his grandchildren, and Joshi or Josh by his colleagues. He lived a colorful life full of stories.
Bharat was born to the late Bhanushaker and Ramavati Joshi on June 22, 1948 in Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania. He spent his childhood in Africa and as soon as he could reach the pedals, learned to drive by moving his father’s car out of the sun and under a shade tree. Some people claim that learning to drive at such a young age, instilled in him the unique driving skills which he carried into adulthood. The day after his 19th birthday he accepted an accountancy position with British Rail, left Tanzania to join his father in London and never looked back. He made London his home for nearly 55 years. Only moving permanently to Atlanta a few months ago as his health declined to be closer to his children and grandchildren. In London he began to develop his passion for entrepreneurship. He opened a greengrocer and later started a chemical sales business which he operated until retirement. In a time when arranged marriage was considered the norm, his independent streak was evident when he fell in love and married Indira, a young nursing student in 1976. Together Bharat and Indira raised 3 children who filled them with pride and joy: Heena (Matt Mikoleit), Hema (Anuj Desai), and Uday (Neki Joshi). His family continued to grow with the addition of 5 grandchildren: Aria Desai, Dina Mikoleit, Arjun Desai, Asher Mikoleit, and Pranav Joshi. His grandchildren were his newfound pride and joy and he took great pleasure in spoiling them (much to the consternation of his children).
To Docs, a stranger was truly a friend he hadn’t met yet. He could effortlessly carry on a genuine conversation with anyone. He liked to tell people about a conversation he had with Richard Attenborough while queing in line to see the movie The Chess Masters. This was experience so typical of Docs’ adventures that it likely could have happened.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, he is survived by 3 brothers and one sister to cherish his memory and keep his stories alive: Devyani, Kiran, Nitin, and Pankaj. Growing up, Bharatbhai was not only the older brother, but frequently would fill in for his father by attending school meetings and supporting his siblings to become the successful individuals they are today.
While his work took a large part of his time; he always made time for his other passion, cricket. He played first team for several London clubs and earned a reputation as a fearsome spin bowler. He took great pride in passing this skill onto Uday who also excelled as a spin bowler. If you’re reading this in the US; this likely makes no sense, however we can assure you that in the UK this is quite a big deal.
He put up a courageous fight against chronic kidney disease. He faced this diagnosis bravely and with an incredible will to live. As a family we are forever indebted to the staff at Bridgeway Hospice, especially his nurse Kierra. The team at Bridgeway managed his physical symptoms and insured comfort, allowing the family to spend quality time with him and insure a peaceful and comfortable transition.
He will be forever loved.
