Charles was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1937, to mother Sarah Eleanor Dyal Hawkins and father Charles Right Hawkins, Sr. Charles graduated from Sylvan Hills High School in Atlanta in 1956 and went on to graduate from Georgia State University with a degree in Business Administration.
Charles participated in ROTC in high school and later served in the United States Air Force reserves in Georgia. Among his memorabilia is a letter of appreciation from the Secretary of the Air Force thanking him for responding to the call of his country during the Cuban Missile crisis in 1962. Charles initially worked managing various importers throughout the United States and then concluded his professional career working for the Georgia Department of Revenue until he retired August 1, 2012.
Charles loved his family above all, which includes his beloved dogs. Charles had a passion for music, beginning with his participation in his high school quartet. In his later years, he sang in the Tucker Methodist Church choir. He is a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Snellville, Georgia, where he and his wife, Lynne, sing in the adult choir and are members of the Berean Sunday School class.
Charles was a man of many interests, chief among them his love of art which he expressed through painting beautiful landscapes and seascapes in oils. Charles loved sportscars and was a member of various Corvette clubs in the metro Atlanta area. He also loved his model train collection which he continued to build and enjoy throughout his life. He loved to read and was a student of history.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Betty Hill Hawkins. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynne Walls Hawkins, his daughters, Robin [Chris] Seppi of Utah, Lisa [Michael] Amandro of Texas, and Tara Trent [partner Tomas Pagan] of Atlanta; grandchildren Don Trent, Jennica Trent, Christopher [Natalie] Pough, Steven [Savannah] Pough; and great-grandchildren Alaina Trent, Lily Trent, Sofia Trent, Braydon Pough, Carter Pough, Palmer Pough, Sarah Pough, and Conner Pough. Even though he was my brother-in-law, I didn’t get to know Charles too well because of the distance we lived apart. But what I did know was a kind, sweet, loving man of God. He will surely be missed and hopefully the next time I see him I will be able to spend the rest of eternity getting to know him.
Rest in Peace Daddy
