John Frederick McCarty, 77, passed away May 26, 2025. Fred was born in Elberton, GA, and then moved to Ware Shoals, SC with his family. He was the son of the late John Walton McCarty and Jewel Golden McCarty.
Fred was a 1970 graduate of Clemson University’s Civil Engineering department. He then proudly served in the United States Air Force. Upon Fred’s return from service, he went back to Clemson and graduated in 1974 with a M.S. in Structural Engineering. Fred went to work with Southern Railway and remained with Norfolk Southern Railroad for 34 years.
Fred was known for his sharp intellect and his deep kindness. He was an avid reader. Much of his spare time was spent on the golf course. He became quite the fisherman with good friends, if you had a taste for stingrays. Enjoyable times were spent watching Clemson football games. He always wanted to paint an orange tiger paw at the end of our street.
Fred will be greatly missed by many friends and his loving family members. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jan McCarty, son Jim McCarty, his loving sister Connie McCann (Ed), nephew Matthew McCann (Stephanie), niece Allison Foy (Chris), sister-in-law Susan Ansley (Sam), niece Samantha Jones (Ben), niece Sarah Winterbottom (Dan), and several great nieces and nephews.
