Sumintra Somwaru

sumintra somwaru

Sumintra Somwaru, affectionately known to many as Auntie Doreen, was born on February 4, 1935 in Corentyne Berbice, Guyana to Rosie and Peter Rash.

Doreen lived in Canje for a number of years. She enjoyed cooking for others, and she was a caretaker to many. She immigrated to the US in October of 1993, and she lived most of her days in Queens, New York.

She fit right into the New York lifestyle as she is remembered as being fiercely independent and strong-willed. She was known for being extremely hardworking, and she always poured her love into her family.

After she became sickly, Doreen relocated to Lawrenceville, GA where she spent the last year. A few months ago in February of this year, she celebrated her 90th birthday in style by wearing her signature birthday tiara.

Doreen departed from this life on the morning of May 20th surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her sister – Somwattie, 4 of her children – Vidya, Devi, Jagdesh, and Sharda, 8 of her grandchildren – Rana, Anil, Vanita, Vinny, Amrita, Christina, Shivanee, and Nirvanie, and her 9 great-grandchildren, including Nichelle and Vincent. She is predeceased by her brother Joseph (1980), her eldest son Vernon (2024), and her grandson Vicky (1996).

On behalf of our entire family, we are so very grateful for the love and support you have shown us during this difficult time. It is deeply appreciated and will always be remembered.

Om Shanti
