Resided in: Duluth, Georgia

Susan Raines Lanford, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, in Duluth, GA, at the age of 70. Born on December 7, 1954, in Palestine, TX, Susan lived a vibrant and joyful life marked by deep compassion, adventurous spirit, and boundless love for her family and community.

A graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Child Development and Home Economics, Susan dedicated much of her career to helping others, working as an administrative assistant in various roles, including positions with Phillips Petroleum, Cigna Insurance, Richmond Tankcar, and finally Chesney Elementary, where she joyfully served for 19 years. Whether in the office or the home, Susan’s warmth, energy, and laughter lit up every room she entered.

Susan was a proud and active member of Beta Sigma Phi and served as President of the U.S. Naval Academy Parents Club of Georgia, always giving of herself with unmatched enthusiasm and heart. She was a woman of many interests and talents—an avid photographer, passionate stargazer, painter, embroiderer, traveler, geology enthusiast, aquarium visitor, bird watcher, and lover of classic cinema. Life with Susan was always colorful, spontaneous, and full of joy.

Raised in the Baptist faith, Susan carried a strong moral compass and an open heart, welcoming everyone she met as if they were part of her family. She had a unique ability to make others feel safe, supported, and unconditionally loved. Her sense of humor was legendary—she delighted in laughter, even (and especially) at her own expense. A self-described “cheerleader for life,” Susan believed in living fully, loving deeply, and always making room for a little whimsy.

Susan is survived by her devoted husband of 42 years, Richard Lanford; her loving children, Nicholas Lanford and Michelle Tanalega; her cherished granddaughter, Evelyn Rose Tanalega; and a community of dear friends and extended family who were all touched by her generous spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Ernest Raines and Bobbie Evelyn Raines.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at Wages & Sons in Lawrenceville, Georgia on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 1:00 PM. The family warmly invites attendees to wear purple, Susan’s favorite color, in her honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Susan’s name—a reflection of her enduring compassion for children and those in need.

Susan often said, “Never allow yourself to be too old, too mature, too stuffy, too busy to have a little fun every day. Also, life is too short to be overdressed all the time. Relax and live a little! Formality can be highly overrated!” Her life was a living example of those words.

Susan Raines Lanford lived with joy, loved with intention, and left this world far brighter than she found it. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I have so many fond memories of Susan growing up together in Palestine Texas. She was a wonderful friend and classmate and such a Christian sister. I was so proud to get to spend time with her at our 50th high school reunion and will miss her sweet smile.

  2. My sympathy to Susan’s family at the passing of this sweet lady. We were classmates in Palestine and it was a pleasure to see her again at our 50th reunion. Prayers of comfort to all who loved her.

  3. CandleImageI loved this sweet lady as a friend, mentor, and sister. She was my confidant and reason I stayed sane for years. Heaven gained an angel and I lost a best friend.

  4. I met Susan when my son was accepted into USNA and she encouraged me to become active in the parents club. I became a board member and we spent time together at many of the Parents Club activities. She always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. She will be missed.

  5. CandleImageMy deepest condolences to Susan’s family and loved ones. Susan worked at Chesney Elementary from the time we opened the school in 2004 and was instrumental in helping set the tone to create a caring and supportive school community. Susan was a faithful and hard worker who was eager to share her talents for the benefit of others. I know she will be greatly missed.

  6. CandleImageSusan was a truly special and kind person. I will always cherish the memories of the times we spent together because of the way she made everyone feel welcomed. Whether it was through a simple conversation or her shared loved for pottery, Susan had a way of making a lasting impact on those around her.

She will be deeply missed. I hope you find comfort in the beautiful memories you have with her and in knowing how many lives she touched.

    With deepest sympathy,
    Shemika Turner

  7. Susan was a sweet beautiful friend from Alamo School thru high school. We reunited for our 50th Reunion and had a wonderful time. She hadn’t changed at all, her sense of humor was still the same. The memories of her in our school life are some of my fondest memories.
I enjoyed seeing on her Facebook page her creative side. She was such an artist. Also, getting to know the family and the cute pets. I could tell she was really proud of all her family.
I know she will be missed by many. My prayers are with you.

  8. CandleImageSusan was such a sweet and kind person! I have never seen a more supportive and helpful person. She will be truly missed. Prayers for peace !

  9. So sorry to have just learned of this very sad news about our fellow member of the United States Naval Academy Parents Club of Georgia. Susan was helpful to our family (and so many others) from the very start. She guided us through the new world of parenting a Midshipman, and for that we will be forever grateful. To Susan and her family – May God Bless You and Keep You Always. “The Navy has small ships. The Navy has tall ships. We have wooden ships and steel ships. But the best ships we have, are our friendships.”

  10. CandleImageSusan was truly a light in this world. She was always willing to help anyone who needed it… with anything! She was kind, patient, caring, and so much more. I will treasure our time together at Chesney.

Sending prayers to her family and loved ones.
