I first met Masa as a young boy, with swept back thick black hair and intentions to marry my Masi. Over the years it seemed to be a theme, that Masa would arrive radiant in face, full of hair, slowly getting younger and appearing healthier. It is testament to his values of clean living, healthy eating that he managed to fight his condition, when others would have folded. His legacy to all of us is that we should always be looking after ourselves… in advance. Most of all that is that you should never, ever, give up… I believe that he learnt this from watching sports: I remember him watching the 6 nations Rugby and jubilantly shouting in admiration when players got back up after being tackled.
I also remember Masa making me ecstatic when he bought me something called a computer! A Spectrum ZX Sinclair. A very special gift given to me with generosity. I loved playing tennis for hours and hours. Apparently he thought of me first: that’s how you make a boy very happy.
This happy memory was to be topped, a few years ago, when were kicking back with a few drinks and chewing the fat for hours and hours about Cricket. Oh boy. I was shocked to find a kindred spirit who loved the game so much. Last week at Lords, I exclaimed that Masa had been a steward there, seeing the mighty West Indians and managing the crowds. What sweet memories he must have had.
We will miss his gentle spirit, his intelligence and most of all his kindness. He was always interested in what was going on in your life, a true gentleman. I have witnessed that he has passed on many of his great qualities, onwards, to my Cousin Sisters. Love to them and my Masi too for they will need strength and our love at this difficult time.
