Gary Wynn Hannan, a beloved husband, father, coach, and friend, passed away on September 8, 2024, in Auburn, GA, at the age of 82. Born on October 7, 1941, in Rome, NY, Gary was a man of many talents, passions, and accomplishments, whose presence uplifted everyone around him.
Gary graduated from Perry High School in Canton, OH, in 1959. He went on to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Marine Corp from 1959-1963, first as an Infantry Rifleman, then later as a member of the Military Police. Following 4 years of active duty service with the Marines, he received a full scholarship to play basketball for the University of Southern Mississippi. While at USM, he frequented the Dean’s and President’s List and was 1 of 4 seniors selected to the Hall of Fame based on academics, leadership and citizenship.
Gary’s athletic talents were evident from his early years. At the University of Southern Mississippi, he excelled as both a baseball and basketball player, becoming a starter in both sports as a freshman and maintaining that role throughout his college career. He finished his basketball career as the #2 all-time rebounder and #3 all-time scorer, remaining in the top ten of seven different statistical categories to this day. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from USM in 1967, and later obtained a teaching certificate from the University of New Orleans.
Following his long-held dream of becoming a coach, Gary began his coaching career in New Hebron, MS, before moving on to Columbia Academy, where he led his high school boys’ basketball team to a state championship in 1989. He continued his coaching career in the Atlanta area at Central Gwinnett High School, coaching both girls’ and boys’ basketball. Known for his positive spirit, Gary built countless relationships with fellow coaches and players, influencing many to strive for success both on and off the court. His players and students fondly remember him as a warm, kind soul who was always quick to share a laugh, offer a word of encouragement, or tell one of his famous one-liners.
Gary’s love for his family was evident in everything he did. He made his family feel encouraged, uplifted, and important, always providing a sense of security and warmth. He was a man who thrived on positive relationships and meaningful connections, and his infectious laughter and genuine kindness made him a friend to all.
Beyond his dedication to sports and education, Gary was also a passionate dog lover, particularly of Great Danes. His life with these gentle giants began with Jake, followed by Casey, Roger, and his surviving Dane, Luka. He loved taking his dogs on walks and excursions, often combining his love for the outdoors with his fondness for his pets. Whether visiting the Smoky Mountains, Glacier National Park, or local parks, Gary cherished these moments of joy and companionship.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Donald E. and Sally Hannan, and his dear friend, Mel Hulme. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Hannan; son Ron Hannan (wife Kim, children Nigel, Brett, and Mya); son Dave Hannan; daughter Michelle Cooper (husband Brad, children Trey and Grant); daughter Angie Smith (husband Greg); sister Lin Ewing (husband Hal); Barbara Hannan (mother of Ron and Dave); and numerous cherished friends and former players.
