Janet was born in Atlanta to Wayne and Gayle Harrison on October 3rd 1970. She attended Central Gwinnett High School and graduated in 1988. Janet went on to pursue an education degree from the University of Georgia; she was the first college scholar from her family. She married Christopher Bruce on November 20th 1994. Janet has spent the last 27 years as a high school science teacher. Her first teaching position was at Winder Barrow High School, then onto Monroe Area High School. For the last 17 years, she has been teaching at Grayson High School. Janet committed her life to being a pillar for anyone who needed her- in or out of the classroom. Spending most of her time with children of her own, of the church, or in the school, she could always be found having fun, being young and silly, and dancing. She devoted her time and energy to giving; giving her knowledge, her patience, her humor, and her love to her family, friends, and students.

Janet is preceded in death by C.A. and Alice (Simonton) Harrison, Netta and Lawton Wasson, and Edgar and Mary Ellen Bruce.

Janet is survived by Christopher Bruce (husband), Dalton Bruce (son), Gentry Bruce (daughter), Mary Ellen Harrison/Jeff (sister), Christopher Harrison (brother), Melissa Bruce Porter/Jeff (sister in law), Wayne and Gayle Harrison (parents), McKenzey Harrison, Victoria Harrison, Hunter Harrison, Gracie Harrison, and Brenden Flannigan (nieces and nephews). She is survived by many other aunts, uncles, and cousins whom she loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Children Healthcare of Atlanta or the Paul Ard Scholarship fund at Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church where Janet has been a lifelong member.

Memories Timeline

  1. Janet was a beautiful person inside and out. She was always pleasant, smiling and ready to help anywhere she was needed. I see her in the church kitchen making food for a memorial reception, I see her at music camp, teaching art and other activities. I see her as an elder, serving her church and community. I see her as a beloved teacher, guiding and inspiring her students. I see her as a loving daughter, wife, sister and mother. I see her as a role model for us all as she lived her Christian life. Her grace, beauty, and sweet spirit will be in my memory always. Loved dearly and gone too soon.

  2. Dearest Bruce and Harrison families,

I know your hearts are broken, and mine is hurting for you. I still think about Janet as that beautiful teenager with a sweet spirit and pure heart in a sometimes rowdy youth group. It is easy to see that she became a wonderful wife and mother who kept true to her Christian values that you, Wayne and Gayle, instilled in her.
We always wonder when we lose someone like Janet why she had to leave when there was so much more for her to do. The only reason that I can think of is that God loved her so much He wanted her rid of the troubles and trials of this world. May your faith in God sustain you as you deal with your loss.

  3. I met Janet when her son Dalton was in my class in Kindergarten. She was the nicest person. I am keeping Dalton and his entire family in my thoughts and prayers.

  5. CandleImageNo words can make the pain of losing a loved one go away. But the family are in our thoughts and prayers.

  6. CandleImageDear Dalton & Family,
My sincere condolences go out to you all. I worked with Janet for 12 years at Grayson High school. She always had a smile on her face and I can still remember her laugh. She loved to laugh, and laughed often. She always talked about her kids, and what they were up to. She loved teaching, and my kids said she had the fun class to be in. God bless you all and I know she has a special place in heaven.

  7. CandleImageRest well my dear colleague and friend. I know you will be in a place where there is no more, pain, crying sorrow or suffering as we lift up your family in prayer.
    Peace and Love

  8. CandleImageSorry for your loss. Janet was a sweet and dedicated teacher that made learning fun for her students. We were colleagues at Monroe Area High School and I thank God for allowing our paths to cross. Your family will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.
