Joan Elizabeth Curley Benson, age 89, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021 after a short illness.

Joan was born on January 6, 1932 in Augusta, GA. She was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Elizabeth Curley. She graduated from Tubman High School in 1949. Her jobs included work with the Fort Gordon Civil Service Division in Augusta, and most recently, 14 years with Key Wallcoverings in Norcross, GA. Her most prized role in life was being a wife and a mother to her two sons as well as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family dearly. She lived for 36 years in Augusta, GA before moving to Dunwoody, GA where she lived for 17 years. She then moved to Lawrenceville, GA where she lived for 35 years. She recently became a resident of Arbor Terrace Hamilton Mill, Dacula, GA and was a beloved member of this community until her passing.

Everyone who knew Joan enjoyed her outgoing personality, her zest for life, and her generous spirit.

Survivors include her husband, Roland Adair Benson, Dacula, GA; her children, Craig (Debbie) Benson, Ellenwood, GA; Alan (Joni) Benson, Suwanee, GA; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Matthew (Emily) Benson, Ezra & Micah, Dacula, GA; Caroline Benson, Chapel Hill, NC; Cory (Hannah) Benson, Suwanee, GA; Cameron Benson, Ellenwood, GA; brother-in-law Harold (Carolyn) Benson, Friendswood, TX; nephew Edwin (Kathy) Benson; and niece Diane (Reed) Malkin, Memphis, TN.

She is preceded in death by her parents Jeremiah and Elizabeth Curley and her brother, Jerry “Sonny” Curley.

A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, September 15 at 10AM at Wages Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, GA. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 9AM. A brief graveside service will be held following the service at 3PM at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, GA.

  4. I am so sad of Ms. Benson’s passing. We are the couple who walked at discover mills and met her also at the eye doctors office in Lawrenceville. We have been concerned how you both were doing. My heart goes out to you Mr. Benson. I miss her smiling face and seeing you both and talking with you at the mall while walking.
