Roy Matthias Helfen, 96, of Stone Mountain, GA passed away peacefully on Saturday, 10/7/2023.
Roy was born in Hammond, Indiana on 9/27/27. He and Wilma (nee Manter) were married on 9/25/48 and just celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary. Roy and Wilma spent the first 48 years of their married life in Griffith, IN and moved to Stone Mountain, GA in 1996. That same year they joined Corpus Christi Catholic Church. They have five children…Joseph (Becky) Helfen, Richard (Della) Helfen, Jennifer Schippers, Paul (Kristi) Helfen and Laura Helfen. They are proud grandparents of 12 and great-grandparents of 18.
Roy served in the US Army Air Corps, retired from the Railroad after 41 years, was a volunteer fireman on the Griffith Indiana Fire Department for 20 years and was a volunteer for St Vincent DePaul Society for many years in Indiana and Georgia. The family camped all across the country with their main camping home at the Indiana Dunes. Roy was a gardener, repairman, electrician, woodworker and crafter, but he is best remembered for his love of Christmas, having multiple trees each year and his ornament collection spanning 75+ years.
Roy & Wilma raised their children with a strong love of God and family. Roy will always be the solid foundation God gave our family. He will be loved and remembered by us all.

Much Love from the Layne Family
We can’t express enough how much Uncle Roy meant to us. He was very special and one of a kind! A huge hole will be felt by his passing when we come for our visits. To Aunt Wilma we are praying for you to get well and that your broken heart heals as well as it can from missing your other half. You have a lifetime of beautiful memories and our Lord Jesus to sustain you until you meet again. See you soon on Friday. We love you all!

We’re 😢 to hear that Roy has left the land of the dying to enjoy his well deserved eternal reward with Our Heavenly Father!
Roy and Wilma have always been such an inspiration for all married couples. They are most certainly blessed 😇 to enjoy each other as a married couple for 75 years!
Roy will be missed not only by his immediate family left behind but also so many lives he touched. We’ve been inspired by both Roy and Wilma since we first met in 1996 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Rest In Peace Roy!
