Agnes Robinette Hayes Mallard

MALLARD, Agnes Robinette Hayes Agnes Mallard, of Decatur, died Dec. 17, 2017, while in hospice care at Budd Terrace, Wesley Woods, in Atlanta. Her survivors include her husband of 66 years, William C. Mallard; daughters Agnes C. Mallard (John Cromartie) and Ann H. Mallard; son William M. Mallard (Yumiko); five grandchildren: Will Cromartie, Emma Cromartie, Josie Cromartie, Sarah Mallard and Hannah Mallard; niece Elizabeth H. Sayers (William); caregiver Grace Thorpe. She was the daughter of Minnie Bond (Anderson) Hayes and Robinette Burns Hayes, M.D., of Hillsborough, N.C., born on Oct. 20, 1921. She had one brother, William A. Hayes (d. 1965). Agnes graduated from St. Mary’s College, Raleigh, N.C., and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C. (1942), and was accepted as an officer candidate in the U.S. Navy WAVE program. Following midshipman school at Smith College, Northampton, Mass., she was commissioned Ensign. As a communications officer, she was stationed at the Headquarters of the Sixth Naval District in Charleston, S.C. Promoted to Lieutenant j.g. and then Lieutenant, she became the communications officer at Naval Air Station Glynco near Brunswick, Ga. After her wartime service in the Navy, Agnes completed the medical records program at Duke University. She was employed as Assistant Medical Records Librarian at Colorado General Hospital in Denver, and Medical Records Librarian at Roper Hospital, Charleston, S.C. After her marriage, she was employed at the Medical School of the University of North Carolina. When her children had grown, she was employed at St. Joseph’s and later at Georgia Baptist hospitals in Atlanta. She enjoyed visits with friends and family in Japan until sight and hearing problems limited her activities. Funeral services will be held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Atlanta, on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at 11 a.m. Agnes followed politics at the local and national levels and was a long-time supporter of those who work for justice and equality. Emmaus House in Peoplestown, Atlanta, was especially important to her.
