Andrew “Andy” Matz passed away unexpectedly on December 21st, 2025 due to a medical condition. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Andy was born in Massachusetts on May 13, 1975, and spent his formative years growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, a place that shaped much of who he was. After growing up in Maryland, Andy later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he built his home, family, and community. From an early age, Andy’s life was rooted in sports, teamwork, and friendship. He was a natural athlete and a passionate competitor, most notably serving as quarterback for the Towson High School football team, where he earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and classmates alike. Sports were never just games to Andy—they were a way to connect, lead, and build lifelong bonds.
Andy carried this love of sports throughout his life. He was a lifelong sports enthusiast and a devoted Baltimore Ravens fan, proudly supporting his team through every season. Beyond athletics, Andy was known for his strong network of friends, many of whom remained close throughout his life—a testament to his loyalty, humor, and ability to bring people together.
Andy’s passion for sports extended far beyond the sidelines. He coached many youth sports, most notably youth football at Collins Hill before his son was born, and later spent countless hours coaching his son’s baseball and football teams throughout the years at Collins Hill, Archer, and Buford. He also served as the strength and conditioning coach for the youth wrestling team at Collins Hill, where his commitment and presence made a lasting impact. Andy believed deeply in the power of sports to shape character, confidence, and discipline, and you could always find him pushing kids to be better—on and off the field—through encouragement, accountability, and heart.
Andy also loved playing sports himself and was an active member of a local men’s softball team, where he formed strong friendships that meant a great deal to him. Whether coaching, competing, or cheering others on, sports remained one of Andy’s greatest joys.
Andy also had a deep love for animals, finding comfort and happiness in caring for them. Those who knew him well will remember his big heart, enthusiasm, and steadfast commitment to the people and things he loved.
Above all else, Andy’s greatest joy was his family. He was a proud and devoted father, and a constant presence in the life of his son, Tyson. Whether cheering from the sidelines, coaching, supporting, or simply being there, Andy was fully immersed in everything related to his children’s lives and passions.
Andy is survived by his parents, Kathleen and Bob Matz; his sisters, Adrienne Matz and Lacey LaFlamme; his wife, Stephanie Matz; his children, Jaden Page and Tyson Matz; along with extended family and many dear friends.
