September 3, 1935 - January 16, 2026
Annette Haney Slaughter went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 16, 2026. At 90, God had blessed her with a good, long and healthy life and she was still driving her car and going to her favorite places, Chick-fil-A and Magnolia’s Restaurant. Her mind was sharp, but her health began to decline in October and found her in and out of hospitals. Like her husband before her, Annette was suffering with some serious health problems and told her family she was ready to go home to heaven. Her husband, Paul “Snooks” Slaughter had died almost two years earlier and she wanted to see him and was ready to go to her eternal home.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Woodlake Baptist Church, which is located at 3940 Georgia Highway 138, Covington. Although it has a Covington address, the church is actually in the Walnut Grove/Monroe community of Walton County. Visitation will begin at 10 that morning followed by the service at 11 a.m.
Annette graduated from Stone Mountain Elementary and High Schools and was a star basketball player in high school. She was recruited by an Atlanta professional women's basketball team and was excited until she found out she would have to travel to places she had never heard of, such as Macon, and stay there overnight. She didn't want to leave Stone Mountain, so that was the end of her pro career.
Annette is known by many for her more than 50 years as bookkeeper and office administrator at The First Baptist Church of Stone Mountain. She was a native of Stone Mountain and loved her "rock." Annette was active in many local organizations, including being a founding member of the 6 A.M. Walking Club that climbed Stone Mountain every day except Sundays for 21 years. She was also a member of The Stone Mountain Woman's Club, Friends of the Library, Stone Mountain Historic Society, Corinth Cemetery Board, PTA at Stone Mountain Elementary and High schools and many other groups. She had been a member of the Stone Mountain Woman's Club for 62 years and served as its treasurer for a long time. Once named as Stone Mountain's Poet Laureate, Annette wrote poetry and short stories all her life. She won regional and statewide awards for some of her poetry.
God blessed Annette with a great sense of humor and a tremendous capacity to make friends and to keep them for life. She and some of her Stone Mountain first grade classmates formed The First Graders Club where they would get together to celebrate birthdays and events. In her 80s, she learned how to use an iPhone and laptop computer and enjoyed keeping up with all her friends through emails, texting and phone calls. For many years, Annette enjoyed getting together with groups of friends and playing card games or dominoes. She was very competitive--and usually won.
For 14 years, Annette worked as the school crossing guard at Stone Mountain Elementary School. She had earlier worked at what was then known as Southern Bell and at the bank in Stone Mountain before going to work first at Redan First Baptist Church and then First Baptist of Stone Mountain, from which she retired five years ago at the age of 85.
Church was the backbone of their family life as Paul and Annette raised their children at Redan First Baptist Church. Paul was a deacon and Annette was church clerk. They also taught Sunday School classes, led the youth group and started the church’s senior adult ministry. For a number of years, Paul and Annette were members of Center Hill Baptist Church in Loganville.
In 2005, Annette and her family were among the founding families of Woodlake Baptist Church where Paul was again a deacon and Annette again served as church clerk. She also started Woodlake’s senior adult ministry, Legacy Leaders.
Annette is preceded in death by her husband, Paul "Snooks" Slaughter, who was her high school sweetheart at Stone Mountain and whom she married in 1956. When Paul died, they had been married for 68 years.
Annette was only 16 years old and in high school when her mother died. She later married and was a young mother herself at 25, when her father died. She is now rejoicing in heaven with her parents, Thurman H. Haney and Eva Brownlee Haney and again, she is with her beloved “Snooks.” She is also with Rebecca Jan, Paul and Annette’s infant daughter who died at three days old. Annette is preceded in death by all her brothers and sisters, including Carl Haney, Thomas Haney, Louise Harbin, Willie Mae Jolley, Ruby Hewatt, Ernest “Mutt” Haney, Nancy Ellen Haney and Frances Cotton. As the youngest of nine, she was the last one to go home.
Survivors include Annette’s two children, Matt Slaughter of Stone Mountain and Beth Slaughter Sexton and son-in-law Carroll Sexton of Loganville; grandson and grand-daughter-in-law, John Paul and Mallory Sexton of Washington; great-granddaughter, Wren McKinley Sexton and great-grandson, Tate Powell Sexton, both of Washington. She is survived by her nephew, who grew up like a younger brother to her, Ronald “Rooster” Spain of Stone Mountain. Annette is also survived by Gail and Mike Lowe of Greensboro, as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
For those who wish to do so, donations may be made in memory of Annette to her beloved Woodlake Baptist Church, 3940 Highway 138, Covington, GA 30014.
