Rainey, Bertha Lucille Boyd
December 9, 1924 – December 9, 2015
Bertha Lucille Boyd Rainey passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2015 on her 91st birthday.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Rainey, her parents Clyde and Bertha Lackey Boyd, and four of her children: Charles Donald Rainey, Bertha Joyce Rainey, Frederick Boyd Rainey and Betty Rainey Taylor. She is survived by her daughter Karen Rainey Forte (Vince); brother Frank Boyd (Beverly); son-in-law Bill Scogin; four grandchildren April Scogin Taylor (Geoff), Anthony Forte (Becky), Michael Scogin, and Matthew Forte (Katie); six great-grandchildren Joseph Forte, Hannah Forte, Sophie Forte, Matti Forte, Lily Forte and Emily Forte; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Lucille was born on December 9, 1924, in Pendergrass, Jackson County, GA. She was the third of ten children born to Clyde and Bertha Lackey Boyd. Lucille ceased her formal education in the 4th grade so that she could help her mother care for her younger siblings. She married Robert Rainey in 1946 shortly after he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy.
She was an avid reader throughout her life and she loved to write poems, some of which were published and award-winning. She worked as a seamstress and was employed at the Fulton County Cotton Mill in Cabbagetown, Atlanta, GA. She later worked for Dean’s Upholstery, where she had the privilege of reupholstering Kenny Rogers’s tour bus and some pieces in his home as well.
Lucille loved to gamble and went on many senior trips to Cherokee, N.C. She also loved “yard saling” and enjoying a good rack of ribs and a sweet potato when going out to eat. Relative to her career as a seamstress, she had an amazing talent for quilting and crocheting and made many beautiful quilts, one of which won an award in 1990.
Lucille will be greatly missed by her family and friends but we know that there were many people in Heaven waiting in line for one of her famous hugs.
Her family will receive guests at Wages and Sons Funeral Home’s Lawrenceville location on Monday, December 14, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will commence at Wages and Sons on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive guests one hour before the service. An informal graveside service is planned for Wednesday, December 16, at 10 a.m. at Bethabra Baptist Church in Winder, GA. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (www.cff.org) or the Cystic Fibrosis Reaching Out Foundation (www.reachingoutfoundation.org). As four of Lucille’s children had Cystic Fibrosis, it is a cause that was close to her heart.
