Obituary

Gary M. Bremer

Gary Michael Bremer, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 86. He was born on June 28, 1939, in San Francisco, California. A proud Marine, entrepreneur, father, and grandfather, Gary lived a life defined by leadership, service, and generosity.

Gary began his military career at the young age of 17 stationed at the Military Supply Center in Albany, Georgia. It was there that he met his first wife, Amelia Steele (Durden), and together they had two sons (Brent & Blake). He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1962, rising to the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his exemplary service. The Marine Corps remained a lifelong source of pride, and he carried its values of discipline, loyalty, and resilience long after his service ended.

After his military service, Gary made Atlanta his home, where he served as a City Commissioner, contributing to the civic life of the city and building lasting relationships throughout the community. During this time, he met Marilyn (Yawn), and together they had a daughter, Brittany.

Gary went on to build a remarkable career in the home health care industry, where he became widely respected for his leadership and vision. From 1978 until 1996, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Health Holding Company, Inc. and its subsidiary, Central Health Services, Inc. Under his leadership, the company grew into a significant presence in the home health sector.

In 1996, he became Chairman of Simione Central Holdings, Inc., a publicly traded information systems and management services company serving the home health industry, and also served as its Chief Executive Officer. His work helped shape the growth and modernization of the home health care field, and he was credited with helping advance critical protections and standards that support the industry today.

Gary was a mentor to the hundreds of people he employed and changed many lives through his generosity and leadership. He fostered a culture of loyalty and shared success by establishing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), allowing employees to share in the ownership of the company. He was widely respected as a leader and businessman by colleagues throughout the industry.

Gary was also active in the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC), where he was honored with the organization’s prestigious Florence Nightingale Award and inducted into the Home Care & Hospice Hall of Fame for his contributions to the field.

He remained active in business and philanthropy throughout his life. Gary was a co-founder and director of the Foundation for Medically Fragile Children, an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and their families. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Medal of Honor Foundation, working alongside recipients of the nation’s highest military honor to support veterans and preserve their legacy. In addition, he served as a director of Fayette County Bank and was an organizer and director of ebank.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Gary had a deep love of history and was rarely without a book or documentary exploring the past. He enjoyed travel, good cigars, and long conversations about politics, history, and the state of the world. His sharp wit and colorful expressions were well known to friends and family.

Those who knew Gary will remember his generosity, intelligence, charm, and unmistakable personality. He had a gift for conversation, an instinct for leadership, and a way of leaving an impression on everyone he met.

Gary was deeply proud of his children and grandchildren and took great joy in their lives and accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Bremer, and by his former wife, Marilyn Cooper (Brittany).

He is survived by his children, Brittany Bremer, Blake Bremer and his wife Caryn, and Brent Bremer; his grandchildren, Blake Michael and Jordan; and by his former wife, Amelia Steele (Blake and Brent).

A private burial and celebration of life will be held on April 1, 2026.
