September 13, 1959 – July 11, 2020
Gloria Staples Miller (Lawrenceville, GA) passed away peacefully in the arms of her husband, Philip Miller, in the early hours of Saturday, July 11, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Louise Virginia Staples and Russell George Staples. She is survived by her husband, Philip Miller; son, James Martinez (josh); aunts Margaret Staples and Myrt Payne; cousins, Roxanne Sherman (Michael) and Larry Staples (Susan); and beloved cats: Stoli, Taffy, Vel, and Sugar Bear. Gloria’s spirit was infectious and her loyalty to her friends and family was unparalleled. She had a love for music and took any chance she could to enjoy a concert. In her free time, Gloria ran over 40 marathons and looked forward to her tradition of running the Peachtree Road Race each year in honor of her father. She was also an avid supporter of PFLAG and the LGBTQ+ community. Gloria’s happy place was Brooklin, Maine. She visited as often as possible and cherished her time spent while visiting family. As her health declined, she was no longer able to visit, yet often talked of retiring and moving to Maine. Her wish was to have her ashes poured from Mountain Dew bottles off of the Blue Hill Falls Bridge as the tide heads out to sea. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Gloria to PFLAG Atlanta (pflagatl.org.) A private memorial service will be held later in the year.
