Hugh Albert Farmer

March 5, 1957 — May 23, 2026

Hugh Albert Farmer of Lawrenceville, Georgia peacefully passed away after a year and a half long battle with acute myeloid leukemia in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 23rd, 2026.

Hugh was born on March 5th, 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia to Evelyn and Marvin Farmer. He attended elementary and high school in DeKalb County, graduating from Columbia High School in 1975. During his high school years he enjoyed playing soccer and football.

After graduating from Columbia High School, he attended DeKalb Community College earning degrees in Physical Education and auto mechanics Upon graduating college, he married Lynne Smallwood in June 1980.

Hugh started his working career working in the auto center for Rich’s. Later he managed an oil center for Pennzoil, transitioning within the company to salesperson where he remained for 25 years. During this time at Pennzoil, his love for NASCAR flourished, where to his delight he was able to attend numerous races and even assist the pit crew during a race.

After retiring from Pennzoil, he worked for Dilmar Oil Company as a salesperson before beginning a 14 year career with Gwinnett County Public Schools Transportation Department as a Bus Manager and trainer.

As a bus manager for GCPS, he enjoyed transporting children to the schools, developing a rapport among them as a favored driver and training new drivers. Hugh was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in February 2025.

He is preceded in death by his infant son Jacob, infant daughter Jessica Lynne, and wife Rebecca Lynne Smallwood Farmer, mother Evelyn Jones Farmer and father Runie Marvin Farmer, brother John Marvin Farmer.

Hugh is survived by his oldest son Justin Albert, youngest son Travis (Taylor), granddaughter Ellis and grandson Emerson; sister Joyce Mills, sister-in-law Melissa Farmer and many cousins and extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Blood Cancer United at bloodcancerunited.org, American Cancer Society or a donation of platelets and/or blood at either the Northside Hospital or Cobb County locations of Atlanta blood services.com.

Funeral service following cremation will be at Snellville Community Church sanctuary on Saturday June 13 at 1:00pm.
