James A. Carroll, known to many as Jim and to his grandchildren as Papa, passed away on February 15, 2026, leaving behind a deeply loving family and a legacy of steady strength, great humor, and unwavering support.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Petersburg, VA, Jim built a life grounded in hard work and devotion to his family. He was drafted into the United States Army and, after graduating from Officer Candidate School, earned the distinction of Army Ranger. He was stationed in Germany during his service. While it was not a path he initially chose, the experience shaped him in lasting ways, and in later years he took quiet pride in his service.
Jim earned his Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management from Florida State University, a school he remained passionate about throughout his life—especially during football season. Go Noles!
Following his military service, Jim built a distinguished career in food service leadership. He served as Food Service Director for the Florida Department of Corrections and later achieved great success with Compass Group, retiring as Senior Vice President of Operations. His career reflected his strong work ethic, leadership, and his ability to earn both respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike.
Outside of work, Jim found his greatest joy in time spent with those he loved—gathering with friends and fraternity brothers, discovering hole-in-the-wall restaurants and hidden culinary gems, cheering on the Seminoles, and spending days on the water boating, swimming, and fishing. He was adventurous at heart and believed some of the best meals were found in the most unexpected places. But more than anything, he cherished his family. He was the steady, level-headed presence in any room—the one who quietly supported others, offered calm perspective with a touch of humor, and reminded everyone not to take themselves too seriously. He was deeply loved and widely respected, and his absence leaves an immeasurable sense of loss.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, James L. Carroll; his father, James A. Carroll II; and his mother, Helen Carroll.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jane Carroll; his daughter, Shawnda Harris; his son, Skyler Carroll; his daughter-in-law, Erica Carroll; his sister, Ginny Blaznek (Tom); his grandchildren, Addison Starkey (Amber), Gavin Leifheit, Zakary Starkey, Madison Carroll, Stella Starkey, and Scarlett Carroll; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on March 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church, 800 Lawrenceville Highway, Lawrenceville, Georgia 30046. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, his ashes will be spread in the Grand Tetons. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church, or St. Benedict Catholic Church.
