James Maples Martin, 85, of Duluth, Georgia died December 15, 2014. He was born in McMinnville, Tennessee in 1929. He grew up near Huntsville, Alabama. As a young man attended Warren Wilson High School and College, just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. He worked on the farm there to pay for his tuition through high school.
He graduated from Western Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science. James married Ruth Costen Martin soon after and then served 4 years in the United States Army as a 2nd Lt. in the Ordinance Corp during the Korean War. Mr. Martin received a Master’s Degree in Education and Administration. He worked for Bell South in a variety of management positions for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Norcross Presbyterian Church. He liked the outdoors and was an avid hunter and golfer and longtime member of Berkeley Hills Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Martin, a son, James L. Martin, daughter-in-law Phyllis Martin and two grandsons, Beau Martin and Zachary Martin. He is survived by his sisters Betty Fogg and Helen Floresch.
A memorial service will be held at Norcross Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 18
th
at 2:00 pm.
