Joan Margaret Salman

Joan Margaret Salman, née Weigand, of Winder, GA left the world peacefully and surrounded by family on July 27, 2026, at the age of 88. Born September 7, 1937, in Barberton, Ohio, Joan graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. Afterwards, she worked as a nurse in Timken Mercy Hospital in Canton, Ohio, where she met psychiatrist Feyyaz Salman of Izmir, Türkiye. Joan and Feyyaz married on May 30, 1959 at St. Augustine’s Church in Barberton. They had five children, who they raised in Essexville, MI, Valdosta, GA, and several places in between. Over the years, they operated a family practice, created a club that celebrated cultural diversity, and cared for several animals – from dogs and cats to a monkey, goats, chickens, and a bull. Those who knew Joan will remember her for her deep love and devotion to her family, friends, and pets; her infinite generosity; her wit and broken Turkish; and her passion for documenting her ancestry, landscaping and gardening (her favorite was at her house in Winder), and for making crafts. Her family and friends are comforted under the blankets and in the clothes that Joan crocheted for them as they share memories of her life and all its adventures.

Joan’s death was preceded by her husband, Feyyaz Salman; parents, Jack and Margaret Weigand; her sisters Connie Leigey and Barbara Santilli; and her brother Jack Weigand. She is survived by her siblings Margaret Trenta, Mary (Tom) Codispoti, Ann Katherine Weigand, Mark (Barb) Weigand, Christine (Ed) Tomayko, and Therese Weigand; her children Rose Cummings, John (Julie) Salman, Osman Salman, Aydin Salman, and Engin Salman; her grandchildren John (Charisse) Cummings, Alan Cummings, Margaret Cummings, Rebecca Cummings, Alyssa (Adam) Mandwee, Chloe Salman, Emily Salman, Zekiye (Jonathan) Lucko, and Cengiz Salman; her great grandchildren Tyler Mason, Amir Mandwee, and Isabel Lukco; as well as by several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
