John "Sonny" Burford McCurdy, Jr., 78, of Monticello, GA, passed away on August 31, 2012. Sonny lived most of his life in Stone Mountain and spent many days at The Rock. He attended Stone Mountain High School where he met the love of his life. He served in a number of different roles at Stone Mountain First Baptist Church and was the one who could always calm the unhappy baby in the nursery. Sonny retired from Krafts Foods after 30 years of employment. He loved to garden and fish and had a special passion for Georgia Tech football. None of this compared to his love for his family – his legacy will long be remembered for his unselfish love for his wife, children and especially his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by daughter, Belinda Carol McCurdy. Sonny is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Smith McCurdy; children Celina Chris Garrett of Lilburn, Rhonda Huey Vanderford of Hoschton, Carl Carolyn McCurdy of Conyers, and Tanya Jeff Hicks of Buford; grandchildren Brandon Emily Garrett, Benjamin Garrett, Blair Garrett, Bailey Hicks, McKenna Hicks, Ansley Hicks, Samantha McCurdy, Kaylee McCurdy, and Alyssa McCurdy. Sonny's siblings include Alice Garrison, Robert McCurdy deceased, Dan McCurdy and Don McCurdy. Services will be held on Sunday, September 2, at 1:00 p.m. at Wages and Sons Funeral Home, 1040 Main Street, Stone Mountain, GA, 30083. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the funeral home parlor.
