John E. Rice

December 18, 1918 — November 1, 2011

John E. Rice, minister, chaplain, educator and storyteller, passed away November 1 at the age of 92. A graduate of Duke University, he served as an Army Chaplain in WWII and the Korean War, and as a Methodist minister in the Florida conference for 25 years. A charter member of the Southern Order of Storytellers, he spent twenty years after his retirement as an entertainment director in North Georgia, and as emcee at various folk festivals in the GA and NC mountains, where he also played guitar and sang. During this time, he also authored five books. He is survived by his wife, Mary Barclay Rice, three daughters, Erin Hart, Pamela Lanza, and Lynn Eddy, four grandchildren, soon to be five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 5 at 3:00pm at The Little Chapel inside the Glenn Memorial Church School Building at 1660 North Decatur Rd., on the Emory University campus in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ?Resident Council?, 1300 Montreal Road, Tucker GA 30084 please use this exact wording and exact address ONLY.
