Lawrence H Darrow

February 23, 1926 — June 4, 2014

Lawrence H. Darrow, most recently a resident of Sunrise at Buckhead in Atlanta, died June 4 after a brief illness. He previously lived in the Northlake area of Dekalb County, Georgia. Trained as a classic painter, Darrow was the art director for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers from 1975 to 1994. Darrow created many original works of art for the organization which reproduced them for the covers of its monthly trade publication and were displayed in its Atlanta Headquarters. He was also a mentor to young editors and designers, sharing his unique combination of commercial art, fine art and printing technology experience. Darrow was born in Chicago in 1926, a distant relative of famed lawyer Clarence Darrow. After serving in the US Air Force during World War II, Darrow studied at L’Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Before becoming ASHRAE’s art director in 1975, he was Art and Production Manager for American Fabrics Magazine. In addition to his publishing work, Darrow had several exhibitions of his paintings to his credit both in the New York City area before moving to Atlanta in 1981 and at various Atlanta galleries after his relocation. Among his other interests was golf, a passion he pursued at the Candler Park Golf Course. He was preceded in death by his wife of many years Joan, and is survived by sons Justin, Andrew and Leland.
