Louis William Schierman

Louis William Schierman, 86, of Atlanta, died December 18, 2012, at Hospice Atlanta. Louis was born February 16, 1926, in Carlyle, IL to Ferdinand and Gertrude Sautmann Schierman. He attended St. Mary's High School in Carlyle, IL. After serving briefly in the army during World War II, Louis attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. For several years he operated a successful poultry business. In 1957 he married Mildred Pettet of Poplar Bluff, MO, who was the editor of the Carlyle Union-Banner. Louis built their first home in Carlyle, but soon afterward their property was purchased by the U.S. government to create Carlyle Lake. Louis returned to school at Iowa State University, graduating with a Ph.D. He was on the faculty first in the department of surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, then in the department of pathology at New York Medical College, and finally in the departments of Avian Medicine and Medical Microbiology at the University of Georgia. He published numerous articles on immunology and genetics throughout his career. He also enjoyed renovating houses, restoring antique cars, playing with his dogs many of whom he named Snoopy, and becoming a grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joan Garde. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred; sister, Mary Lager Diekemper; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Joel Fowler; son and daughter-in-law, John and Hiroko Schierman; and grandchildren, Jacob and Molly Schierman. At his request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers contributors are asked to donate to the charity of their choice. Condolences may be sent to 1066 Eden Ave. SE, Atlanta, GA 30316.
