Martha Sue Smith

Martha Sue Smith passed away on September 18, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on July 30, 1946, in Stone Mountain, Georgia, she lived a life marked by faith, devotion to family, creativity, and kindness. Those who knew her will remember a gentle and sincere woman who made others feel welcomed, valued, and deeply loved.

Martha graduated from Stone Mountain High School in 1964 and went on to attend Dekalb Beauty College, graduating in 1965. That same year, on September 13, 1965, she married her high school sweetheart, Hiram C. “Sonny” Smith. Their marriage of 61 years stood as a lasting testament to love, commitment, and shared life together.

In her working years, Martha served as the OTC manager at Wal-Mart in Hohenwald, Tennessee, retiring in 2013. Beyond her career, she found joy in the creative work of her hands. She loved quilting, crocheting, and sewing, and she also enjoyed collecting nativities and butterflies. These interests reflected the warmth, beauty, and care she brought into her home and into the lives of those around her.

Martha was a part of Hope Baptist Church in Winder, Georgia, and her faith was an important part of her life. When family and friends remember her, they think of family, faith, creativity, gentleness, helpfulness, love, kindness, and sincerity. She had a special gift for making her family feel good, loved, and invaluable, and that gift remains one of her most enduring legacies.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Hiram C. “Sonny” Smith of Winder; her son, Andrew W. “Andy” Smith of Dacula; her daughter-in-law, Melissa Lee Smith of Dacula; her daughter, Mary Katherine “Kathy” Smith Reynolds of Dacula; and her brother, Jerry Attaway of Loganville. Each of them carries forward treasured memories of her steady love, welcoming spirit, and the comfort of knowing they were deeply cherished.

Martha was preceded in death by her father, Andrew W. Attaway; her mother, Lillie B. Campbell Attaway; her sister, Ann Attaway Baldwin; and her twin sister, Joyce Attaway Wilkins. Their memories remained part of the story of her life and the family she loved so dearly.

Visitation will be held on September 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in State Room A&B at Wages and Sons Funeral Home - Stone Mountain Chapel, 1040 Main St, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Wages and Sons Funeral Home - Stone Mountain Chapel. Burial will take place on September 24, 2026, at Melwood Cemetery, 5170 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083.

Martha Sue Smith will be remembered with deep love and gratitude for the life she lived and the care she gave so freely. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were blessed to know her.
