Maynard Lee Nalley, Jr.

Maynard Lee Nalley Jr., 89, of Lawrenceville GA passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013. A native of Atlanta, he served in the 101st Airborne Division during WWII, making five jumps during the Normandy invasion and European Campaign. He was with the 101st when they took Kehlstein, The Eagle's Nest, Hitler's mountain top retreat near Berchtesgaden, Germany. After the war Mr. Nalley returned to Atlanta and was employed by Chrysler Corporation, where he met Clydene, his future wife. He became a licensed master plumber and worked for Scoggins' Plumbing Co. in East Point, GA until beginning work with Cory Coffee Co. as a serviceman. He also served as an Explorer and Eagle Scout leader and Little League Coach. He retired in 1977, but continued activities such as picking oranges while RV camping in Florida. Eventually he retired his plumbing tools and ladder, and became one of the first male volunteers at Gwinnett Medical Center with Clydene. He worked for Wal-Mart in Lawrenceville as a greeter, and then Kroger as a greeter. This "part-time" job lasted for six years. He became acquainted with everyone in Lawrenceville and was voted Employee of the Month several times. Known as "Hobo" the clown, he demonstrated his compassion for children by visiting the Children's Hospital in Greenville, S.C. to perform balloon tricks and talk with the young patients. He was voted Shrine "Clown of the Year" in 1992. He and his wife Clydene were members of the Joy Class at Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church. He was a member of Lawrenceville Masonic Lodge #131, Lawrenceville Daylight Lodge #744, the Scottish Rite, the Gwinnett Shrine Club and the Grand Lodge of Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Clydene Ashworth Nalley, of Lawrenceville, daughter Susan Nalley Bishop and husband Ray, of Loganville GA and son Maynard Lee Nalley III and wife, Cindy, of Roswell GA. He is survived by four grandchildren, Richard Remillard of Marietta, Patrick Remillard and wife , Brooke, of Lawrenceville, Emily Remillard of Oakland, California and Brett Nalley of Roswell, GA. He was lovingly called "PawPaw" by his three great-grandchildren, Jaden, Avery and Elaine Remillard of Lawrenceville. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Frances Nalley Waits and Bill, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Runette Ashworth Saltee and Larry, in addition to many nieces and nephews. Arrangements for Maynard Lee Nalley Jr. are being handled by Wages and Sons located on Lawrenceville Highway in Lawrenceville GA. The memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Nalley will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville GA.
