Michael (Mike) Lauer passed away peacefully at his home in Loganville, Georgia, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Mike was born at Fairchild Air Force Base just outside of Spokane, Washington, the fourth of five sons born to Keith and Dorothy Lauer. When Mike was two, his family moved to the rural village of Corfu, New York, where he and his brothers’ penchant for adventure and exploration solidified their bonds with each other. Mike received his First Holy Communion at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Corfu, where he and his brothers also served as altar boys.
At the age of thirteen, Mike’s family moved to Plantation, Florida where he attended St. Gregory Catholic School. When Mike was sixteen, his family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, where his father was stationed at Robins Air Force Base. Mike graduated from Warner Robins High School in 1987 and attended Middle Georgia State University.
In 1989, Mike enlisted in the United States Air Force. After Basic Training, he attended advanced training as a C-130 Loadmaster, which he completed at the top of his class. Mike was assigned to the 700th Airlift Squadron at Dobbins Air Force Base.
In 1990, when the Gulf War broke out, Mike was deployed on active duty in Operation Desert Shield, serving in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, where he participated in classified combat airdrop missions.
Mike proudly served his country and was awarded an Honorable Discharge. Mike lived most recently in Loganville, Georgia and was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church where he frequently volunteered with the local chapter of the St. Vincent DePaul Society helping the less fortunate. He was generous with everyone he met and enjoyed travelling and buying gifts for people. He loved his family and most especially travelling up to Buffalo each year for Oktoberfest family reunions.
Mike is preceded in death by his brother Brian (2011); mother Dorothy (2020); and brother Tim (2021). Mike is survived by his father, Col. Keith Lauer (Ret.) of Loganville, Georgia; his brother Dan and his wife Courtney of Dallas, Texas, and their children Olivia, Ryan, and Cameron; his brother Chris and his wife Katherine of Charlotte, North Carolina, and their children John, Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Thomas, and David; and sister-in-law Holly Smith of Macon, Georgia, and her and Tim’s daughters Anne, Ava, and Sophia.
