Norman Self

April 27, 1925 — December 31, 2023

Norman was born and grew up in Burlington, NC. After graduating from Burlington High School, he enrolled at Elon College, completing one year of studies before going into the Navy in June, 1943. There, he was an ordnance officer and aerial gunner in the Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron VPB 124, seeing action while based in Okinawa and receiving the Air Medal of Honor. After discharge, Norman resumed his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his BS in Commerce in 1949. He was a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity. In 1951, he began employment at Sears Roebuck, working for 35 years until retiring in 1986. Norman loved choral music, singing with the Decatur Civic Chorus for 28 years, and touring Europe three times with the group. He also sang tenor in the choir at Lawrenceville First Methodist Church. Norman loved sports, especially tennis and golf, and in high school, was known to throw a pretty mean curve ball. He is survived by his loving wife Joan D. Self, son William Self and his wife Mandy (Salt Lake City, UT) his son-in-law Tom Williamson (Raleigh, NC) husband of Norman’s predeceased daughter, Susan Self Williamson. Norman is also survived by his step-daughter Priscilla Boss (Buford, GA), step-son Lionel Dangerfield and his wife, Karen, and their daughters, Heather and Lauren. His niece, Ann Self Sidlinger and nephew Dr. Robert L. Self Jr. both reside in Burlington, NC. The family wishes to express profound appreciation to Rosa Montoya for her constant love and care for “Mr. Norman” during his final years.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Music Ministry at First United Methodist of Lawrenceville, Lawrenceville, GA.
