Robert Jackson "Jack" Buford

Robert Jackson (“Jack”) Buford passed away at the age of 91 on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at home in Lawrenceville, GA. Born September 13, 1930 in Marietta to tenant farmers Fred & Eva (Morgan) Buford, Jack worked in the cotton fields and graduated from Acworth High School. In his youth and young adult life, he was an active member of the Baptist Church.

Jack served in the US Army from February 1951 to January 1953 as Chief Cook for the 315th Signal Construction Battalion, Company C, which installed telephone poles and provided other services in Germany after WWII. In 1999, he began joining Company C reunions twice each year. He had steadfast and loyal Army friends and loved hosting and participating in the reunions. He also authored newsletters that included updates on the Company C “family” and a page of sayings and jokes that he called “Crumbs from the Kitchen” which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Jack spent many years in sales for aluminum and flat glass companies where he made special lifelong friends. He loved his trips to Lake Okeechobee, FL, dove hunting weekends, and golf outings with the “boys”. Even though he didn’t hunt, Jack was an active member of the Frontier Hunting Club in Thomaston, GA on the Flint River where he built a cabin (Upson Downs) and enjoyed spending time with his wife, friends, and dogs (Sabado, Lija, TJ, and Bella Blue) while “watching the river go by”.

Jack is survived by his wife of 40 years, Phyllis Salvador Hamrick Buford, from St. Augustine, FL; his brother, Fred Buford, of Gainesville, GA; his daughters, Debby Buford and Dianna Buford Heredia (Craig), of Hanford, CA; his stepson, John Hamrick (Louise), of Roswell, GA; and his stepdaughter, Christine Finch, of Roswell, GA. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and a large extended family in St. Augustine, FL, who he loved spending time with. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jack was a good soldier and a very patriotic American who will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Wages & Sons Funeral Home (Gwinnett Chapel), 1031 Lawrenceville Highway, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 (www.wagesandsons.com) from 11:00 to 12:15 in the chapel, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:30 and a reception at 1:15. Jack will be buried at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA at a later date.
