Robert Llera

Dec 25, 1932 — Jun 17, 2026

Robert Llera was born on December 25, 1932, in Virginia, to the late Juan and Juanita Santos Llera. He was born in Norfolk, St. Vincent's hospital. Known to family and friends as "Bob," Robert was an outgoing, kindhearted man who embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity.

He enjoyed staying active throughout his life and took great pride in his athletic accomplishments. At the age of 74, he won the Senior Swimming Medal in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 25th Annual Georgia Golden Olympics, a testament to his lifelong dedication to fitness and perseverance.

Bob had many talents and hobbies. He was an accomplished winemaker, supplying his church for Sunday services and sharing with friends. A gifted musician, he played both the piano and the 12-string guitar and harmonica, delighting those around him by playing and singing Bob Dylan songs. In his 40’s he developed a passion for horseback riding and horsemanship..

One of the most extraordinary chapters of Robert's life began in his childhood. His father was serving in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. Robert and his family survived the attack, witnessing the events unfold from their home on base. He often spoke of the shock and uncertainty of that day, recalling the fear that a Japanese invasion might soon follow.

Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean war. Although he initially trained for the infantry, his exceptional swimming ability was quickly recognized, and he was reassigned as a swimming instructor for basic training. He often described it one of the luckiest breaks of his military service.

Professionally, Robert was a pioneer in the early days of computing. Early in his career, he helped install and maintain the first computer in the southeastern United States at First National Bank of Atlanta. He often recalled the long hours spent replacing vacuum tubes to keep the massive machine operating, a vivid reminder of how far technology has advanced.

Above all, Robert was a man of deep faith and a devoted Catholic, and faithfully lived Christ's commandment to "love thy neighbor." After he retired, he and his beloved wife, Betty Jo, dedicated countless hours to operating the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, serving those in need with compassion, generosity, and humility. Robert will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, unwavering faith, generous heart, and the joy he brought to those who knew and loved him. His legacy of service, perseverance, and love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. His beloved wife Jo, of over 30 years, passed away in 2015.

He is lovingly remembered by his son Jeff, daughter Tracey, grandson Luke—who adored his Papa—as well as his nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

“You have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
