Ruth Ann (Johnson) Payne, 82, of Viborg, SD, passed away unexpectedly in her Georgia home on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Ruth was born on March 30, 1944, in Viborg, SD, to Albert and Josena (Larsen) Johnson. She was the youngest and last surviving of six siblings Harlan Johnson, Evelyn Gill, Bernice Stevens, Elaine Jorgenson, and Dale Johnson. She grew up in Viborg, where she attended and graduated from Viborg High School.
On July 3, 1966, Ruth married Buddy Lee Payne at Bethany Lutheran Church in Viborg. Together they made their home in Stone Mountain, GA, where they welcomed their two children, Terry and Tami. Although they divorced in the early 1990s, they shared many years raising their family. Buddy preceded Ruth in death on February 28, 2019.
Ruth devoted more than 35 years of her career to John H. Harland in Atlanta, GA, before retiring. She was known for her strong work ethic, quiet determination, and unwavering commitment to providing for her family. Most of all, she treasured the lifelong friends that she gained from working there.
Retirement brought Ruth some of the happiest years of her life. She cherished spending time with her companion of more than 30 years, Steve Dobson, and making memories with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, especially her trips to Florida. Some of her favorite moments were the simplest ones: waking early with a cup of coffee, walking along the beach with the sand between her toes, and later returning to watch the sun sink below the horizon, finding peace in each sunset.
Above all else, Ruth was so very proud of her children and grandchildren and treasured every conversation with them. She wanted to know what was happening in their lives, celebrating every accomplishment and offering the same unconditional love and support through every disappointment. Ruth’s greatest joy was her family.
Those left to cherish her memory is her son, Terry Lee Payne of AR; her daughter, Tami (and Todd) Buschman of Atlanta, GA; and her three beloved grandchildren, Taylor Ann Buschman, Morgan Tia Buschman, and Garet Allen Buschman, all of Atlanta, GA. She also leaves behind her dear companion Steve Dobson of Duluth GA.
A funeral service celebrating Ruth’s life will be held at Spring Valley Lutheran Church, rural Viborg, SD. She will be laid to rest beside her mother, a place that has always held a special spot in her heart.
There are no words to describe the hole in our hearts that will be left with her passing.
Rest in peace, Ruth. Your love will remain with us always.
