Samuel Venet

April 3, 1918 — June 3, 2014

Samuel N. Venet, of Stone Mountain, passed from this life on June 3, 2014. Born in Johnstown, PA. on April 3, 1918, to Sicilian immigrants Giovanni Venuto and Cosima Piazza, he was the tenth of twelve children and the last surviving. A clerk’s slip at Ellis Island turned Venuto into Venet. After service as an Army MP during WW II, Sam married the love of his life, Helen Hartl of New Rockford, N.D., on August 10, 1946, in Washington, D.C., where they had met at a Memorial Day USO dance. Helen died on June 25, 2000. After a 32-year career in the U.S. Public Health Service and the Social Security Administration, which saw stints in such widely varied locales as New York City, Las Vegas, Chicago (twice), and New Orleans, he retired in 1976. In 1980, Sam and Helen moved to Stone Mountain to be closer to their daughter and her family. Following Helen’s death in 2000, their son moved from California to live with and care for his father. Samuel is survived by son John of Stone Mountain, daughter Cosima Lyttle and son-in-law Tom Lyttle of Decatur, grandson Mark Lyttle of Sunnyvale, CA, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the wonderful Thursday lunch crew at the Toco Hill Longhorn who made his weekly outings always a special treat. Funeral Mass 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 6, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Stone Mountain, Father Kenny presiding.
