A man of deep intellect and curiosity, Sonny attended Rocky Mount Schools (K-12) before furthering his education at North Carolina State, Western Technical College, and Bell Laboratories Technical School. His career spanned decades of innovation and excellence, serving as a Industrial Engineer at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. from June 1957 until February 1960, a Senior Development Engineer at Western Electric Co. He was an active member of the American Institute of Engineers, always engaging in discussions about the future and progress. A lifelong Episcopalian, he carried his faith with quiet strength, always offering kindness and wisdom to those around him.

Above all, Sonny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His love for his wife, Florence Estelle Rose, whom he adored for 75 wonderful years, was evident in every moment they shared. He was a proud and caring father to his sons, always listening, always encouraging, and always making them laugh with his quick wit and storytelling. His family loved hearing about his travels, and his warm presence made everyone feel valued and appreciated.

Sonny was preceded in death by his beloved son, Thomas Hyman Rose, Jr. (Debbie); his grandson, Peyton Rose; his parents, William Gray Rose and Ella Josephine Rose; and his siblings, Lucille Rose Ethridge, William Henry Rose, Ivan Lee Rose, James Elmer Rose, and Charles Irvin Rose.
