William J. Shubert

February 4, 1936 — March 14, 2022

William Jefferson “Jeff” Shubert (known lovingly to his family as “Pop”) passed peacefully at his lake home in Monticello, GA on March 14, 2022, with family at his side. Jeff was born in Stone Mountain, GA on February 4, 1936. His family moved to Charleston, SC, then to Dallas, GA. Still a young man, Jeff returned to Stone Mountain where he met his wife of 65 years, Joan Lee Shubert, at a school dance.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Estelle Shubert; daughter Cindy Shubert; and sisters: Ollie Greer, Dorothy Edge, Carol Clarke, and Laura Kelly. He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons: Buz Shubert (Dineen) of Monroe, GA; and Randy Shubert of Stone Mountain,GA; grandchildren: Haley (Justin) Crawford of Cumming, GA; Cody Shubert of Monroe, GA; Casey (Kelsi) Shubert of Jackson, GA; and Riley Shubert of Monroe, GA; great-grandchildren: Kamden, Walker, and Haynes Crawford and Emmy Gray Shubert; sisters: Barbara (Joe) Anderson of Snellville, GA; and Diane (Tommy) Cross of Loganville, GA as well as numerous other family and friends who loved him dearly.

Jeff began his working life as a soda jerk at Mountain Pharmacy, where local men sat in theater seats and told colorful stories. He retired from a successful career in the paint industry, beginning at Sherwin Williams. Jeff then moved on to Sanders Paints before he co-founded Shubert Paints in 1980 where, today, his sons proudly continue his legacy. Jeff was a past president of the Southern Society of Coatings Technology (SSCT) and a deacon at First Baptist Church of Stone Mountain.

Jeff loved sports, reading, camping, music, and children, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid fan of Atlanta and Georgia’s professional and college sports teams, especially the Georgia Bulldogs. Of all his loves, hobbies and interests, Jeff cared most about his family. He took his kids and grandkids on great adventures and would weave fanciful tales of varying levels of veracity – from stories about characters from Stone Mountain in his younger days to fictional stories where his grandchildren were always the heroes. Jeff is described as a “fine fella” and the “sweetest, kindest man you could ever know”. His humor, intelligence and spirit will be greatly missed.
