Hazel Underwood age 85 passed away September 27, 2021 from Alzheimer’s at home.

Hazel was born in Lawrenceville, Ga at her grandfathers home the Guthrie home place on Pleasant Hill Road where it still stands today to John B. Guthrie and Edna Raby Guthrie on March 21, 1936.

She was preceded in death by her parents John B. Guthrie and Edna Raby Guthrie. She is survived by her husband Charlie P. Underwood, Jr, sister Beverly Lougher, son Chuck Underwood (Ruth), daughter Jody Deuel (Brent), grandson John Underwood (Dana), great-grandson Matthew Underwood and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hazel graduated from Rabun Gap Nacoochee High School in 1954 and went on to play semi-pro basketball for the Atlanta Redheads. In 1955 Hazel attended Berry College in Rome, Ga where she would meet the love of her life Charlie Underwood. After Charlie graduated from Berry he went into the Army and Hazel would return to her parents’ home in Lawrenceville where she worked at Bellsouth in Atlanta and with her mother in her parents Country store on Pleasant Hill Rd. In 1957 Charlie and Hazel would marry at her parents home and would move to Tampa. Fl where their son Chuck was born in 1959. After leaving Tampa they would move to Fitzgerald, Ga and on to Douglas, Ga where their daughter Jody was born in 1961. Finally they would return to Lawrenceville, Ga in 1962. Charlie and Hazel would build their first home next to her parents and would live for 30 years before they moved to Buford.

Hazel was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and daughter but being a grandmother and great-mother was a blessing to her.

Hazel loved the game of golf. She had the opportunity to spend years playing golf at Northwood Golf and Country Club on Club Drive with the Dogwood Ladies. She would play at multiple courses in the Atlanta area and would continue playing with the senior ladies before she retired her golf clubs. She made many lifelong friendships and won many awards and championships during her golf years. Hazel also enjoyed working at Perimeter Mall as one of the seasonal decorating crew, and volunteering at Gwinnett Medical Center, Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church and stayed active at Rabun Gap on different committees.

  1. CandleImageFor the first time in my life I cannot reach out to my big sister for love and advice. She has always been my best friend who loved me unconditionally. God was very merciful to take her home when He did but I will miss her so much. Hazel had a wonderful life with Charlie. We shared so many Guthrie family memories, Rabun Gap memories and Lougher/Underwood memories that filled our lives with joy. Rest in peace sister. I will always love you.

  2. CandleImageHazel was a treat, and a joy to be around. Only met her late in my life, but she was a lady worth knowing. You will be missed by all.

  3. CandleImageWe had lots in common including Alums at RGNS, our loved ones. I will miss your sweet smile and ability to enjoy the day. God bless your family. C

  4. CandleImageKaren and I are so sad to hear of Hazel’s passing. She was a fine person and always had a smile for everyone at Rabun Gap’s Homecomings. Charlie may God give his blessings to you and family during this time of sadness.
