Babye Jewel Oakes Baggett

babye baggett

April 2, 1929 ~ August 13, 2025

Born in: Lawrenceville, Georgia
Resided in: Lawrenceville, Georgia

Babye Jewel Oakes Baggett was more than our Mother. She was a wife, a grandma known as ‘Ma’, a poet, a dancer, a storyteller. A lover of life filled with positive energy who endured and handled the five of us. Ninety-Six years ago, she was born in Lawrenceville, GA., the only town she would ever live in, almost next door from her childhood sweetheart and soul mate, Joe. They eloped in 1948 and were together until Daddy’s death in 2002. Mother was always questioned about her Southern name, which was never a mystery when her father, Jule Oakes was married to Jewel Hill Oakes and that she was the baby of the family. Mother’s life was filled with adventure: the love of the hunt for a bargain, (any bargain!), the love of the sights and sounds of the Georgia mountains and streams and traveling with her children and good close friends. She always gave more of herself than she received but never asked for a receipt. She was always there for anyone who asked for good sound advice or a pat on the back as well as constructive criticism. She was an inspiration to all whose lives she touched. Mother moved out of Lawrenceville and into Heaven, leaving her daughters, Betsey Clark, Laurie Baggett (Stan), and Suellen Baggett; Sons, Joe Baggett, Jr. and Jay Jay Baggett (Gay). Her cherished grandchildren: David Flowers, Jesse Clark, Jeremy Hodges (Christine), Kaily Thompson (Jesse), Kellie Yeap (Tony) and Jake Baggett (Chelsea) as well as 12 great grandchildren and a host of Baggett, Summerour and Oakes nieces and nephews and their families. Nettie Evans also grieves with us; she was Mother’s amazing caregiver and friend for many years who we call love and give great gratitude. We also want to thank Georgina and Lori for devotion to Mother throughout the years. A visitation will be held from 11:30AM – 1:00PM on Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Wages and Sons Funeral Home, 1031 Lawrenceville Highway Lawrenceville, GA 30046 with the funeral service to begin at 1:00PM. A graveside service will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park where Mother will be at peace sleeping again beside her sweetheart, Joe.

Guestbook

  1. CandleImageI had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Baggett through Brightstar. I was one of her caregivers. We all loved her and wanted to care for her. I remembering begging my boss to be her caregiver full time. 🙂 Favorite memories? Getting ice cream together, shopping and watching Gatsby together. She loved the costumes.
Ms. Baggett was a gracious and beautiful woman inside and out. Also, she was a fashionista! 🙂 Her outfits were beautiful, fun and she knew how to accessorize! My condolences to her family. They loved their mama and made sure her caregivers were vigilant and provided the best care. Ms. Baggett will always hold a special place in my heart.

  2. My condolences to the entire Baggett & Oaks families & loved ones! Mrs. Baby was always so good to me! God speed Mrs. Baby! Y’all remain in my thoughts & prayers! Sincerely, Tammi Hollard McPherson

  3. CandleImageThe world lost another beautiful lady who truly influenced my life. Some great memories stopping by her home over the years. I grew up with Chip and we hung around their house as boys, but I continued to call on her until I was well over 50 years old . She always seemed to enjoy me coming by and invited me to many times . I know how very special she was and I pray the good Lord will comfort and hold all her children at this time of separation. She lived a great life and touched many, I will forever remember her as a mom and friend . God bless all as you celebrate her life.
