James Harvey Butler, Jr., a longtime former resident of Lawrenceville, Georgia, died Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at his home in Hoschton. He was 83.
Born on September 5, 1941, in Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Butler was raised in Decatur and graduated from Southwest Dekalb High School in 1959. Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1962.
Mr. Butler spent most of his professional life in the construction industry, working in commercial construction until 1987, when he completed his tenure with Gilly Building Corporation as a project superintendent. He then established himself as a residential home builder, founding and operating his own companies until retirement.
A man known for his craftsmanship and versatility; Mr. Butler pursued numerous hobbies with the same dedication he brought to his professional life. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. His creative skills were evident in his fine wood carvings and custom knife making. He also excelled in competitive shooting events.
Described by those who knew him best as strong, tough, competitive, fair, honest, and generous, Mr. Butler was the quintessential “man’s man.” His family recalls a protective figure who made them feel loved, safe, and secure. His quick wit, occasional pranks, and unexpected zingers brought laughter to those around him.
He was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville and, at the time of his death, belonged to Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church.
Mr. Butler was preceded in death by his father, James Harvey Butler, Sr., and his mother, Lillie Lee Campbell Butler. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nan Riggins Butler; two daughters, Stephanie Akins (husband Brett) and Brandy Vick (husband Michael); and four grandchildren, Grey Akins and his fiancée Ansley Boyles, Cole Akins, Kaitlyn Vick, and Lilie Vick.
