  6. Really going to miss Uncle Jim. I spent many hours on the phone the past few years talking with Uncle Jim about Jesus and spiritual things. Edith always wanted me to call back to talk with Uncle Jim. All those early family reunions in North Dakota, Colorado, etc. Love his family. Words cannot express my loss. He and I would talk for hours about spiritual things, heaven, Jesus. I always noticed that love seemed to come over the phone. All those sermons, prayers at reunions. He made it special, safe, happy. Always wanted everyone to get married, and have children.

  7. To Edith, Tim, Karen, Daniel, Michael and the entire Brooks family – we are sorry for your loss but rejoice that he is now with his Savior. He was indeed a very special man!

His love for the Lord and his knowledge of the scriptures was so inspiring, when he gave the sacraments during Communion, was so special, you felt the presence of the Lord. Thank you for the time that you Edith and Pastor drove faithfully every Sunday and

How wonderful that his journey home was so peaceful.

  15. I was so sorry to get this sad news. I have know James for many years. His family were our neighbors when we were in grade school. Our thoughts and prayers are with Edith and family. Just know that we have our wonderful memories to sustain us. Phyllis

  16. We have memories of a Godly man who always spoke the word of God with conviction and faith. Well done, good and faithful servant! Blessings and peace to the family.

  17. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to spend time with Grandpa Brooks. Even as a grandson-in-law Grandpa made me feel as one of the family members. He taught me about the birds and the bees, he showed me how to shoot at squirrels with the air rifle, and strongly encouraged me to become a Lutheran minister because, after all, he needed someone to give his library to! I wish I could be there to celebrate his life. I can’t wait to have him show me around heaven!

  18. I remember Pastor Brooks as a very caring and nice man. He really made an impression on me. He was Pastor of our church from 1976-1981. I was 2 years old when he became our Pastor. I was glad to have known him. He has certainly earned his rest with our Savior.

  19. Edith and family, our prayers are for you at this time. We were certainly blessed to have our paths cross. I hope Pastor remember our covenant of holding a room next to his. Pastor Brooks was more than a pastor to me he was a confidant.

May the PEACE that surpasses all understanding be unto you .

    Mathis family

  24. Pastor Brooks was a great man, always enjoyed listening to him. I was confirmed by him, was always such a kind and caring person. Please accept our deepest sympathy, and enjoy all the wonderful memories of him!

  25. My Sympathy and Prayers go out to Edith and family. Pastor Brooks was a remarkable man and minister and I am so blessed to have known him and his family. May God be with you at this time. I will forever be grateful for Mountain Movers and Pastor Brooks.

  26. We are so sorry for your lost. Pastor Brooks taught us so much and married us also. We will keep our great memories in our hearts forever. We will continue to visit and call Edith. We love her so much.But we know he is absent from the body but he is present with the Lord;

  27. I attended Oak Grove Lutheran High School from 1963 to 1966. I just know that Pastor Brooks was there at that time. He gave me fabulous advice about life and love and for a Lutheran school he was light years ahead of his time. I followed his advice, fell in love, lived my life up until 2008, had wives and children and after all that life had thrown at me, I finally married the love of my life, the one he advised to follow. His name just popped into my head and I looked him up. I wish I had looked him up last year. He had a profound influence on my life and probably didn’t even know it. Now he does.

  28. Pastor Brooks was a teacher at Oak Grove High school in Fargo ND back in the mid 60’s…he was my favorite teacher and someone who instilled some values in me that have served me for my entire life! RIP pastor Brooks!

  29. I just learned of Pastor Brooks’ passing. He was a huge influence on the students at Oak Grove! He showed us how to live as Christians in a less than ideal world. It was an honor to know him!

  30. Pastor Brooks encouraged me 47 years ago to go on a blind date while attending Oak Grove Lutheran High School. I married that man 45 years ago. Thank you Pastor Brooks.

  31. So sorry to just learn of Pastor Brook’s passing. What a wonderful man he was too! I attended Oak Grove Lutheran High School while he was there and what a profound effect he had on everyone he met. Never turned anyone away who needed his help and soothing words. RIP Pastor Brooks God is so lucky to have you as one of his helpers. God Bless your family until we all meet again.

  32. Pastor Brooks was indeed a wonderful person, a very competent teacher, and a man of God. He taught me how to have faith and questions at the same time. He taught me to think more deeply about life and demonstrated this in his own life. I would never have become a pastor without his influence and guidance. Yes, rest in peace, dear friend!

  33. Rev Brooks was my Bible teacher and mentor at Oak Grove Lutheran HS back in the 60’s. He had such a profound affect on so many of us. I remember him talking about his doubts about faith over his life and this helped me when I had some of the same doubts later in my life. Rest in peace, Pastor Brooks. The Grovers all love and miss you.

  34. June 10, 2016

I just discovered Rev. Brooks’ obituary. My condolences to John and the family. We were neighbors of Rev. Brooks and his family when they lived in Fargo ND back in the sixties. I learned and still remember an important lesson about forgiveness from Pastor Brooks.
