Stone Mountain, Georgia
Donald Sydney Osgood of Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain, GA, died May 22, 2024. He was born in Lawrence, MA on August 17, 1926. Don, who was 97 years old and had lived at Park Springs for almost 10 years, died peacefully on Wednesday evening after a brief illness.
Don graduated from Lawrence HS in 1944 and spent two years serving his country in the Navy’s small craft maintenance facility in Newport, Rl. In 1950, he married his high school sweetheart Janice Joynson, and in 1951, he graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduation, Don began his 35 year career with General Electric. He was soon transferred to Atlanta, his home base from which he traveled extensively managing installations of steam and gas turbines in paper mills and power plants throughout the southeast. He retired from GE in 1986.
The couple had two sons – Brian and Eric. While Don continued to travel, Jan stayed home with the kids in their Doraville home. The couple lived in this home for 50 years, moving in 2014 to Park Springs.
Don was a dedicated husband and father. The family spent weekends together camping, hiking, visiting family, or working in the yard. The boys enjoyed scouting, and Don was one of the volunteer Boy Scout leaders.
After retiring from GE, Don and Jan continued traveling and eventually purchased a small motorhome. They explored much of GA and the southeast and made trips to New England, the west coast, and several National Parks. They were also active volunteers in their community. They delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered at their church and with their local AARP chapter, did Appalachian Trail maintenance, worked at their polling center, volunteered at Zoo Atlanta, and did many other projects such as building for Habitat for Humanity and post-hurricane relief work.
When he wasn’t volunteering or traveling, Don enjoyed woodworking, baking, and cycling. He rode with his two sons on BRAG (the Bike Ride Across Georgia) and rode on a bicycle built for three with his son Eric and his wife Linda in several tandem bicycle events until the ripe old age of 84.
Don and Jan were also devoted grandparents to Jason and Nickolas. They spent many hours at the zoo, playgrounds, and other fun places for kids.
Don was a Mason for 74 years and was a proud member of the Chamblee Sardis Masonic Lodge. He became a Mason in New England in 1950, but his Chamblee brothers welcomed him with open arms when he joined their lodge in his late 70s.
Don’s world changed in 2005 when Jan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Don cared for Jan at home for 8 years before she required more assistance and moved to a memory care facility and eventually to the skilled nursing facility at Park Springs. His dedication to Jan was and is still legendary at Park Springs. Jan died in 2017, leaving a huge hole in Don’s world.
Don is survived by sons Brian Osgood and Eric (Linda Wood) Osgood and grandsons Nick (Emily) Osgood and Jace (Kelly) Cadle, and several loving nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. Many of these extended family members attended his 95th birthday party in Stone Mountain in 2021.
A graveside Masonic service will be held at North Atlanta Memorial Gardens in Dunwoody on Saturday, June 1 at 11:00am. Don’s Celebration of Life will be held in the Community Hall at Park Springs in Stone Mountain that same day at 1:30pm.

I had very fond memories of going out to eat with Donald during the park spring days. He will be missed
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. I will plan on attending the Graveside and his Celebration of Life. My condolences go out the entire family. I always remember his bright smile.
Our deepest sympathies to the Osgood family on your loss. We had the privilege of getting to ride our tandem alongside Eric, Don, and Linda at several cycling events. We have many fond memories of those rides. What a long and happy life he had and was able to share with his family. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.
Peter and I are sorry to hear this news. We too have memories of him riding “middle seat” on your tandem – most of us can only hope we are spry and fit in our 80’s to still ride! You both were very integral in keeping Don active – mentally and physically. You can say goodbye, knowing you gave him your all for many years. May he now rest in peace.
Eric and Linda, we offer our heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your dad. We are thinking of and praying for you today and in the coming days and hope that all the wonderful memories you shared will lift your spirits.
Your Florida Grande friends,
Rich and Jackie Frigon
Dear Brian and Eric. Sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad, my uncle Donald. Whenever I saw him he was always upbeat and fun. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Don befriended me when I moved to Park Springs just over three years ago, He and Dick Barbe invited me to join their lunch table and we became very good friends. I shall miss him, and my thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
We are sorry to hear of Don’s passing. He led a long and fulfilling life.
Brian, Eric & Linda, Nick,Emily & Jason, I am truly sorry for your loss of your Dad & Grandfather. As a child I always looked forward to Uncle Donald’s visits. After my high school graduation, came the invitation to visit Atlanta and stay with Aunt Jan & Uncle Donald. This was a tradition for only the nieces. We all went to visit when it was our turn. What a great time it was. We always kept in touch & no matter our age Uncle Donald would call his Florida nieces after the threat of a hurricane or bad weather to make sure we were safe. What a wonderful man he was and he will be truly missed. Sending prayers, love and hugs.

Our sincere condolences to Eric and Linda over the sad passing of Eric’s dad, whose impressive longevity confirms he lived a good, healthy life, which is a blessing if ever there were.
Dear Brian, Eric & Linda, Nick, Emily, Jason and extended family, Our condolences to you in the loss of your Dad, Granddad, Uncle and our great friend. Don was a valued member of the MelloTones, the men’s chorus here at Park Springs for most of his years in residence. Indeed, he was so important to the group that he was often introduced as the “President” of the ensemble! Don and his constant smile, encouragement, offers to do anything he could for us, his voice and, especially, his friendship are and will be greatly missed.
Uncle Donald was a joy to know and love. His dedication to Aunt Jan was stellar. When we visited with Uncle Donald and Aunt Jan we would stay at Park Springs as guest and join him for meals. Upon seeing his pillbox I asked what his medications were and his response was Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Vitamin B. There were no meds! His love of family, his faith, his friendship will be sorely missed. His memory will always be with us in all our hearts.
Sincere condolences to all the family and friends.
Eric & Linda, We are so sorry to hear of
I will miss you Uncle Donald.
Donald and Jan were part of our lives in a small way, since we are up here in CT. We always enjoyed sharing little Christmas gifts and cards, even emails with Don! Occasionally we would phone each other and it was good to hear his voice and what adventures he and Jan were into. Then Jan would get on the phone and fill in the blanks that Don might have “missed!” A lovely couple, truly “Two People and One PERSON!” All our love to the rest of the family in Atlanta!
We send condolences to Don’s family. We had the privilege of knowing Don when he rode the triple tandem with Eric and Linda. He was a good sport with a good sense of humor.
Our condolences to Brian, Eric, Linda and Don’s extended family. We enjoyed riding alongside Don at many tandem events. I especially am thankful for his life of volunteering. Even at Park Springs where he continued to host bingo for those in skilled nursing. He was such a comfort to my mother when she was there.
