Born in:
Alabama
Resided in:
Georgia
Dr. Donald Milton Durrett passed away peacefully Friday, January 3 at Lenbrook in Buckhead after extended illness from Parkinson’s. Born in Birmingham, AL, Don was the only child of Milton and Eva Durrett, both lifelong Alabama residents. After graduating from Shades Valley High School at age 17, he attended the University of Alabama receiving both his undergraduate and medical degrees with honors. He moved the family to Atlanta for his internship with Emory at Grady Hospital, then served two years in the Army at the US base hospital in Nuremberg, Germany. Returning to Atlanta in 1970, Don completed his radiology residency at Emory, then began a thirty plus year career as Chief Radiologist at South Fulton Hospital in East Point while residing in Stone Mountain.
A gentle and generous spouse and father, Don prioritized family time and left a legacy of fond memories such as sailing on Lake Lanier, summer beach trips to Amelia Island, and many local cultural and culinary excursions. He and Karin were long-time members and Sunday school teachers at Smoke Rise Baptist Church. Don was also active as a Boy Scout Leader to three Eagle Scout sons. He placed a premium on education and set a high standard for individual discipline and achievement. He is remembered as a warm, loving husband and a selfless, sacrificial father. Although he could be cautious and safety-focused in his guidance (do you have your driver’s license and insurance card with you?), he allowed his children to step out with confidence into their own paths. We endeavor to channel his memory and follow his example.
Don is preceded in death by Karin (Severud, and known to her grandchildren as KK), his loving wife of 46 years. He will be dearly missed by his five children: son Don Jr. of Marietta; daughter Dr. Lynley Durrett (Brian Thomas) of Buckhead; daughter Lori Berger (Mark) of Atlanta; son Christian (Saraliene) of Marietta; and son Dana (Fia) of Dunwoody. Also, ten grandchildren, who called him “Googa”: Amelia Eggen (Jack), Mitchell Durrett, Lydia Durrett, Laurel Phillips, Lindsey Phillips, Luke Phillips, Viva Durrett, Cara Durrett, Grady Durrett, Calvin Durrett, plus great granddaughter, Marley Jean Eggen. He is also survived by his first wife, Linda Motley, of Atlanta.
The family gives special thanks to caregivers including Tanya, Nathan and Marie of Superior Home Care of Georgia for their compassionate care shown in his final years and months, as well as Olive Branch Hospice.
Services will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 2:00pm at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in the Wilson Chapel. Family will greet visitors beginning at 1:00pm at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations please be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

To The Durrett Family–
I am so sorry for your loss. I have heard wonderful stories about Dr. Durrett over the years from Crystal Blackwell. Praying God’s peace and strength during this difficult time.
Blessings,
Tenera McPherson
I can remember Dr. Durrett telling all of us to wear our helmets, as Christian and I rode go karts in the yard. He was always running around the neighborhood, came to our Scouting trips, and loved to snow ski with the family. When I got older, I had a neck injury. I told him I was getting mixed feedback from the radiologist. I went over w my films and MRI. Karin made lunch, and Don wrote out two pages of notes for me to cover with my doctor. Just a good guy. He will be missed.
