Eugene (Gene) Dowell Scott, aged 93, peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at his home in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Gene was born on December 8, 1930, to the late Charles and Camille Dowell Scott in Macon, Georgia. He graduated from Darlington Preparatory School in Rome, Georgia, in 1947, served in the Air Force beginning in 1951, and graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1957. During his time at Georgia Tech, he played on the university basketball team and served as president of the Chi Phi social fraternity.
On December 29, 1956, Gene married Eleanor (Tinka) Wells Scott, who preceded him in death, along with his parents and his brother, Dr. Charles Scott, Jr.
Gene’s love for Jesus and the Gospel inspired his passion for ministry and led him to become a board member for Good Samaritan Health Center and a founding board member for HopeWorks. His generosity with his heart and time extended both locally and internationally. A dedicated member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church for many years, Gene actively participated in numerous Bible studies and Sunday schools. In addition to his active spiritual life, he had an exceptional green thumb in gardening and found joy especially in his daylilies. His love for nature extended to an affection for birds that he shared with his wife, Tinka. Gene played football and basketball in his earlier years and was always an avid Atlanta Braves fan, but cherished watching his children and grandchildrens’ sporting events most. Gene was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, and dear friend to so many. His presence will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Mike and Mary Scott of Newnan, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Charles Crosby of Sandy Springs, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, David and Amy Scott of Sandy Springs, Georgia; his 11 grandchildren: Kathryn (Carl) Lubbe, Robert (Alex) Crosby, Samantha (Frank) Farmer, Michael (Katherine) Crosby, Kevin Scott, Megan (John) Good, Joseph Lambert, Anna (Noah) Huffman, Esther Lambert, Jesse Lambert, and Naomi Lambert; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Good Samaritan Health Center, HopeWorks, and Mount Vernon Baptist Church, all of Atlanta, Georgia.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Johnnie, Sophia, Angela, Angie, Jennifer, Stefani, Alex, and Linda who provided such compassionate care to Gene.
A memorial service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 2 pm at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 850 Mount Vernon Hwy, Atlanta, Ga 30327. Following the service, the family will welcome friends in the fellowship hall of the church.
