Obituary for Fred “Bunk” Hagan      Frederick “Bunk” Hagan was born March 21, 1928 in Sylacauga, Alabama and died January 11, 2014 after an extended illness.  He was the son of Fred Wheeler and Nita Grover Hagan.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nita; and three children: Lisa Hagan Derrick, Fred Hagan, Jr., and Erich Hagan; three grandchildren: Steven Derrick, Christopher Derrick, and Julie Derrick Mehelic; and six great grandchildren.       Bunk graduated from Columbia Military Academy in 1946 and attended The University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  He worked for the City National Bank in Sylacauga as Senior Vice President.  He received a Distinguished Service Award from the city of Sylacauga in recognition and appreciation for fifteen and a half years of outstanding service to the citizens of Sylacauga as a member of the city council, serving four years as president of the council.  In 1962 he was named Young Man of the Year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Sylacauga.  On February 19, 1976 Bunk began working for the state of Alabama Finance Department in the purchasing division in Montgomery, Alabama.  He retired on February 25, 2001.      He was active in the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama and in the Pathfinders Sunday School class.  He taught Sunday School and served as president of the class. He also taught a young adult Sunday School class.  He served as Lay Leader when needed.      Bunk’s hobbies were flying his Cessna plane, boating, riding his Honda motorcycle, photography, and reading.  He owned several thousand books.  He was a Bible scholar and read his Bible daily and had a devotional. He also painted and wrote poetry on occasion.  He had a wonderful talent for telling tall tales to his grandchildren that he just made up on the spot.  He had a quick wit and a photographic memory.  He was able to connect with people from all walks of life and made a difference in the lives of many of those people.  His life was a gift.      Family and friends of Bunk will celebrate his life in the chapel of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00.  Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 at the church.  In lieu of flowers donations in Bunk’s memory can be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Montgomery or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

  1. Dear Nita and Lisa and Fred: I well remember Mr. Bunky as a kid growing up in Sylacauga. Lisa and I went to school together and were very close friends. My prayers are with you all and know God is your strength and comfort.
