February 4, 1937 ~ December 1, 2024

Born in: Chicago, Illinois
Resided in: Loganville, Georgia

George Edwin Matthews was born February 4, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to his loving parents, the late Samuel and Emma Matthews. Because his father was a railroad engineer, George had a love for trains and was an avid collector of N-scale model trains.

George graduated from Castlemont High School (Oakland, CA) in 1955. He attended Laney Community College (Oakland) and California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo, CA)

He served in the California National Guard in the early 1960s as a Radar operator for 90mm Anti-aircraft and then Nike Ajax surface to air missile.

George was a man of many talents. In his younger days he enjoyed woodworking. He was a wedding photographer, ran a printing business, but spent most of his career as an electronics technician. One of his most notable positions was a research and development electronics technician for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

He enjoyed food and he enjoyed watching shows about food. His favorite was Mexican and had high expectations for a good chile relleno. He loved a good dad joke or riddle and loved it even more when it stumped you.

He always had a plan for the future. He always had projects he was working on, mostly involving his trains. Up to the very end he was focused on living his life to the fullest.

George loved his son Art. He enjoyed sharing his love of trains with him. It was something they enjoyed doing together. So In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in George’s honor be sent to Friends of Southern Pacific 4449 www.4449.com or by supporting any other railroad preservation efforts, visiting a local railroad museum, or riding a train.
