May 12, 1929 ~ March 17, 2023

Born in: West Chicago, Illinois
Resided in: Decatur, Georgia

Beloved father, grandfather and friend, James Hegner passed away at the age of 93 in Decatur, Georgia. An honored fixture within his community, James’ smile and encouraging words will be missed by all.

James began his life in West Chicago, IL, spending his youth as an outdoor sportsman. He supported the Allied war effort by trapping pelts that were used to line airmen’s jackets and the entire family loved camping and fishing. His family relocated into the city in his teens and James later joined the Army after high school. He attended the University of Illinois, first in pursuit of his Bachelor’s of Education, later returning to obtain his Master’s of Science. While at Illinois, James met and then married Dolores, the love of his life. In 1957 the young couple moved to Maryland and began a family. James accepted a position with the CDC in 1963, relocating the family to Atlanta, GA. His career as a biologist spanned over 2 decades with highlights including germ research into anthrax and the fledgling AIDS virus.

Jim was a lifelong Cubs and Bears fan. With a head for numbers and dates, he could tell you about games he cut classes to attend as a teen, who played at which position, along with their stats, all well into his 90’s. He enjoyed watching sports but was wise enough to know when to turn off the game and take a walk or pick up something to read. James’ lifelong intellectual curiosities extended well beyond retirement with interests that were many and varied. Among numerous pursuits, James enjoyed history, the natural sciences and discussions on current events.

James is preceded in death by his wife Dolores, his daughter Michelle, and his brothers Buddy and Mike. He is survived by his sons Curtis and Robert, as well as his grandsons, Michael and Josh.
