Jim earned his undergraduate degree from Ouachita Baptist University and his MD from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. He met and married his wife, Mary Margaret Thorpe while doing his residency at the University of Minnesota. They moved to the University of Kansas Medical School where Jim became the head of Pediatric Hematology focusing on cancer research. Jim was then appointed the Dean of the University of Kansas Medical School. He took a sabbatical and earned his MPh at the School of Public Health at Harvard. Eventually, they moved to North Carolina where he was part of the cutting-edge epidemiology team at Duke University. He moved to the American Cancer Society in Atlanta where he reviewed grants, then transitioned to developing a script for ACS call centers. He enjoyed volunteering, specifically on the Board of Directors at the Jerusalem House.

First and foremost, Jim was a loving husband of 59 years, father and beloved grandfather. He loved the arts, especially the opera, symphony, and painting. He had a passion for rose gardening and travelling with his wife, Peg. He was a lover of learning, current events, non-fiction, fine food, and his friends and family.

In addition to his parents and two brothers, he was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Gingles Lowman. Surviving in addition to his wife, Peg, are his daughter, Josie Lowman; sons Jamie Lowman, John Lowman (Leigh); two grandsons, Thomas and William Lowman.

  2. Dr. James Lowman was an exceptional person in many ways. His competence as a skilled pediatrician, a successful Dean of a medical school, a valued member of the American Cancer Society, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and so many more attributes accomplished during his life. As his family and friends knew, he was so modest and wise that many turned to him for advice and guidance-and he never disappointed. We shall miss him.
The legacy continues on through his wife and family to whom we send our love and respect,
    John and Pat Laszlo
