Janet Hope Thomas born, March 9, 1953 in the Parrish of Kingston, Jamaica, W I, to Woodrow and Thelma McGhie. She was baptized as a child and confirmed Roman Catholic.
She spent her childhood and teenage years in Jamaica. She graduated from Holy Childhood High School, then was employed as an administrative assistant at the Family Clinic at the University of the West Indies. In 1972, she married Norman Thomas and they were blessed with three children, Suzanne, Natalie and Stephen. As a young wife and mother, Janet was initially employed in the banking industry .
The family moved to the United States for broader opportunities, and settled first in New York City before moving to Georgia where Janet began her pursuing her deep interest in biology and anatomy by pursuing a nursing degree. Her perseverance and commitment allowed her to achieve a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Clayton College. She worked in medical surgical units at South Fulton Hospital, Dekalb Medical Center and then Emory Medical Center; at the latter she was on staff at the same time as her daughters. She retired from her nursing career in 2015. Upon retirement Janet began immersing herself in gardening, scrapbooking, and gift baskets, as well as helping take care of her mother. She was an avid reader, family historian and story teller who enjoyed regaling past memories and accounts of our families history and lineage. Janet had a heart overflowing with kindness, always putting the needs of others before her own. A loving daughter and sister, nurturing mother and grandmother, lover of books, crafts, and a good television show.
She became ill in 2022 and transitioned peacefully on May 29, 2023 (Memorial Day) under hospice care at the home of Natalie Thomas Walters with family and loved ones around her.
A loving mother leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Suzanne Thomas McCauley (Wayne), Natalie Thomas Walters (Mike), Son, Stephen Thomas (Toni), Mother, Thelma McGhie, sisters, Rosalie McGhie and Judy McGhie, grandsons, Asa Jordan McCauley and Matthew Jaden McCauley, and many relatives and friends.
Though we grieve her loss, we find solace in knowing that she rests in eternal peace, reunited with loved ones who went before her. May her spirit continue to guide us, reminding us of the profound impact one loving soul can have on the world.

Sorry we could not have shared this journey together. The laughter we enjoyed very few people know how comical you were. A life well lived give credit to our savior Jesus Christ. You broke my heart when I heard of your death, it is painful to lose a precious one, even Jesus wept when Lazarus died. Suffering will be a thing of the past. Your memories will live on in my heart. My condolence to all the family. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” Farewell my friend, Janet and rest is peace.

I truly believe that we are all here for a reason and but for a season and that when these two collide then our job on earth is done. I am a heartbroken and absolutely saddened to realize that your job would be done so soon. I am often told that time will heal all wounds; but l disagree. I believe wounds like these never heal but instead form a scab which at any moment can be ripped open, and then we bleed again. I take comfort ; however in the knowledge that time will harden and thicken the scab and that sometime, somehow we will bleed less. My Precious Janet, until then we will continue to mourn you. I will surely miss your laugh and wonderful sense of humor. Rest in Eternal Peace my friend. Love always. Angella Geddes HCHS. Class 1970
