Joseph Wells “Joe” New passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, at the age of 81. He was born at his home on Rockbridge Road in Stone Mountain, Georgia, on June 19, 1943.

Joe was a dedicated farrier for 62 years, devoting his life to working with horses and training those who owned them. He spent 25 years with Viewmont Appaloosa Breeding Farm and, in his earlier years, rode and broke horses for the public. His passion for horsemanship was evident in everything he did. Though he lived in modern times, his ways reflected the traditions of the Wagon Train Trail. A hardworking man, Joe also cherished time spent hunting and fishing with his sons.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; sons Pete (Brandy) and Reed (Jennifer); grandsons Austin (Haley), Laramie, and Brody; and great-grandson Westin.

A gathering to honor Joe’s memory will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m. at 3932 East Fairview Road, Stockbridge, GA 30281.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Cancer Society (http://www.donate.cancer.org).

Joe’s legacy of hard work and dedication to his craft will be remembered by all who knew him.

  2. CandleImagePete and Reed, our thoughts and prayers are with you, your mother and your families during this difficult time. It was our pleasure to have known your father. What wonderful memories you all must have, and may these memories and love bring you all comfort in the coming days.

  3. He was my Ferrier for a long time and saved the life of one of my horses. He was one of a kind, but anyone who knew him already knew that. Joe was a close friend and I will say that him and
his boys are the most honest people I have ever met. I would trust any of them to the end of the earth and beyond! I will miss the phone conversations we had. One time we were with the boys down back and he asked me, “George did you think 20 years ago, you would be taking pictures with your telephone?” I will miss you old friend.

  4. CandleImageYou will be missed dearly by many…I wish we could have seen you more. We Love and miss you forever ❤️ Love you Pete and Reed, I’m here if you need me, much love 💞

  5. CandleImageThank you, for all the years of sharing your expertise with horses and their care. Joe passed his legacy of knowledge to his sons, we greatly appreciate that gift and all the years of friendship and neighborly concern. Connie, Pete, Reid, and family’s you are all in our hearts and prayers.
